Actually, I'm not asking in regards to issues with a child wasting energy - I'm asking in regards to a really wasteful childish ROOMMATE! She is always leaving lights on all night, TVs on all night, and most annoyingly - turning the thermostat from "auto" to "on" so it runs 24/7! She is so incredibly wasteful with energy that I'm about to go crazy, and talking to her about it hasn't shown any improvements - infact, I think she's getting worse as a way to get back at me.

So, have any parents used timers on the lights, or a certain way to shut the energy off, or a certain tamper-proof thermostat that they could recommend to me? I'm so sick of paying a $200 utility bill for such a small apartment, I could just puke. I'm desperate for a solution. I'm going out of town in a few days for a whole month, and I'm terrified of how high the utility bill will be without me being around to shut lights and TVs off for her.

I cannot move, I OWN this apartment, and she has a lease that does not end for 7 more months.

Buy a thermostate lock, I put one on ours because my hubby likes to boil in the winter & freeze in the summer...just stupid! Also, if you lived alone prior to her moving in... ask her to pay half of the energy bills from that time + the amount she exceeds, when she has to cough up the extra ahe should change her ways!

Well I dont know how the rent and bills go, but if shes not paying any of the utilites then why dont you have her start paying her half. If if just you two living there, then split it 50/50 along with other bills. That way everything is cheaper on your end. She is a roommate so she should be paying. Unless theres a agreement that I am unaware of, and if there is Im sorry. Tell her that if she wants the heater on at night then she's going to have to pay a little more then her half. See if you can add up hours on whos home using what. Im not sure how that works, but I know it can be done. Once you get your bill just add up how manly hours of heat or electric you used, and how many she used and then pay your own share. Im sure once she sees how much shes paying she might be a little more respectful and turn off the lights and all after her. Im sure you can go online and find a website that tells you about how to figure out the cost of the bills. Good luck!

That's a very frustrating situation. The TV and lights don't actually consume that much electricity. Even if left on contstantly, they'd probably only add a few extra bucks to the bill. I imagine that what's doing the most damage is the heater running constantly. You might try negotiating with her- "I don't care if you leave the lights on, but keep the thermostat on auto please." There are programmable thermostats with locks, but it's pretty expensive. I agree with the previous advice to make her pay half the cost of the utilities.

#2. There's already a worldwide shortage of water, so it's better not to waste it and use electricity than make there be less water for other people. In many places, electricity is much cleaner than it was, and electric plants are some of the easiest energy sources to make less polluting. (ex nuclear energy). Cars, on the other hand, is a different story. Good Luck with being Green! :-)
