whats the point of an audio/video reciever?

can i use it to put a 720p signal into it and have the reciever upscales the image to 1080i?

i have noticed that these recievers have video out and video in, so i wanna find out if it can upscale an already high def signal?

like can i run my ps3 into it at 720p. then have the reciever upscale the 720p game to see it in 1080i on my tv?

or is this not the point behind an audio/video reciever?

thanks for your help

im trying to find out if it would help me with a certain ps3 problem that im having.

my tv is native 1080i and then also supports 480p/480i and does not support 720p, which most games are in.

So i've been trying to figure out what can upscale that 720p image to 1080i that my tv supports. im not trying to run it 1080i because i think it looks better its cause for the time being i have to get it into 1080i.

is there something that will upscale a high definition from 720p then output it to 1080i?

if their is something could you please link. i thank you all for your help with this, i do appreciate. THANKS DAN

The point of an audio/video receiver can be for the following reasons:

1) It will act as a DTS or Dolby decoder, in order to get surround sound for movies and games.
2) Allows you to connect more than one audio/video sources, if your TV doesn't have enough input connectors.
3) Allows you to use one remote to switch audio/video sources and control audio from one point.
4) In high end receivers, you will be able to upconvert in video format and resolution. i.e. all sources will be upconverted to component or HDMI.

Let's answer your questions now.

1) Upscaling from 720p to 1080i, mostly not. But, you will have to pay a significant price for something like this. $500+ Plus, you wouldn't want to convert 720p to 1080i because 720p is better.

2) Most AV receivers won't upconvert or convert signals. It will usually work like this. Send s-video signal in and s-video signal out to your TV. 480p in and 480p out. Typically, that's the way you want it because upconverting can cause additional aritifacts.

3) As I mentioned before, 720p is better.

4) Yes, that isn't really the point for an AV receiver. It's one of those features that are in high receivers because high end customers request it. Low end customers just want a switching device, not an upscaling device.

Receivers do nothing to your video. They don't upscale, convert or do anything. Receivers are meant to organize your connection and process sound. Any video you plug into a receiver is just sent right out to the TV. The only thing a receiver really does is process surround sound. You can run your PS3 into it at any setting. Whether you have it plugged into your TV or receiver it should come out the same.
