would you end it before if gets too serious even though you know you're going to beat yourself for doing so because they might be the one. I mean this person is someone that everyone from family members to circle of friends who they think is out of your league and they just don't really like because of his past. should i even consider the man he used to be or just listen to myself that all that matters is now and the man he is to me?

In his past he was an alcoholic, drug user and has been in jail. That was IN THE PAST. Now he is a completely different person. No drugs, no alcohol, has absolutely no desire to go back to his old way of life. I think it's an individual thing. My new guy is independent enough that he knows his own mind and his limits. My soon to be ex can't do that because he, on the other hand, has an addictive personality. I do know that people can change if they want to. If the person can change and has changed, then go with it, but make sure they understand if the "horrible past" shows up again, you may be out the door. We can't change our past, we can only learn from it and move forward. Our past is what makes us who we are today.

It depends on the past you are talking about. If he has a bad record with women/ relationships I would think you will need to be cautious. No matter how spiritually sound this advice may be that people change....well they dont.

You have two choices:

a)Cut it short, and ofcourse endure some heartache now
b) Be with him and endure a heartache for a longer while and move on ( assuming that wisdom will finally dawn upon you). At the same time you might have a few good times. Needless, to say dont stay on to prove it to all the neigh sayers.

You are fortunate enough to now his bearings....and getting into it with eyes wide open.

And....if you must then just go ahead without any expectations.

what is past is past... see him for the man he is and for the man he will be... search into your heart to see if he is what you want... what matters is the man he is now and the man he will be... you have to inspire your man to be the best that he can be... there is no such thing as the perfect man out there... you have to train them ;)

give the bloke a chance... everyone deserves a second chance...

Has he changed? Has he learned from his mistakes? No one should be judged forever by their past mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance at least.
