In the Bible we see that Abraham and Jacob and others had more than one wife. According to Jewish law, it was usually only done in some extenuating circumstance and it was only permitted when it could be afforded. About 1000 years ago most communities forbade it altogether.
The reason that a man could have 2 wives but a woman can't have 2 husbands is quite logical. If a woman with 2 husbands would have a child you wouldn't know who the father was.

Some religions think it's OK or even encourage it.

I'm not religious, but as long as the practice does no harm to anyone, there is nothing wrong with it. The only reason the US has a law against it, for example, is that there are too many elected protestant xtians that don't know how to think about moral questions.

Here's the complications of polygamy. All rules of a normal marriage would still apply. This includes faithfulness to your married partner. So, You could be married to multiple partners, as long as Your fulfilling Your faithfulness, your Love, your keeping of them, your cherishing of them, your honoring of them, and protection of them.. The tricky part, is pulling it off. It's no simple task to keep just one mate happy. Keeping two or more happy, seems impossible. But, if you're well endowed, have lots of resources, and a ton of energy.. then good luck.

only if women are allowed to have more than one husband as well. I'd like 2 or 3 husbands, so that there are always hands around to open bottles, and repaint the kitchen, and when I want a vacation, one to take me and the other 2 to pay for it!

I've noticed it always tends to be a one way street. The men, in some religions, can have plural wives but I can't think of any religion that allows women to have plural husbands. Strange, no?
