My art teacher says this can be done. I KNOW both are water-based. It seems a better option that oils.

Yes you can mix gouache with acrylic. But acrylic paint is cheaper and less work in the long run, and the results are better. If you like the matte opaque quality of gouache, just stick to opaque colours (it's on the label) and use matte medium. Or - you can buy acrylic gouache, manufactured by Holbein paint.
