I don't know. I think when we describe people we always pick the thing about them that stands out the most, as an identifying factor. I was born in Kenya, where everyone was pretty much black, so people would refer to 'my Indian friend" and my "white friend". It is not racist. It is the same as saying "My talll friend". Black people are a minority, so that's why we don't go around saying my white friend, because that doesn't really narrow him down.

I live in a small town and there are only about five black people. Sometimes it is easier to say "black guy" because there is only one in the room and everyone immediately knows who you are talking about it. I'm not saying that's right but it happens.

THANK YOU so much for asking this question. I ask myself this all the time. I don't understand why people need to point out other people's race when speaking about them. I never do it, I guess I just don't see color as an important detail when talking about someone else, just doesn't make any sense to me.

I've noticed that in conversations, people tend to assume that the person they're talking about is white unless otherwise informed. Who knows why?

I'm not a racist but if your friend is black that guy is white, he would say "that white guy" or something

because hes black -_-.. and hes comfortable enough with you as a friend to not be self conscious about racist statements and no one should.. hes making a statement on his looks not making a judgment on his looks...

You'll have to ask him that question. Just casually ask him why it is necessary to emphasize the man's race.
