I am going to PA school so that I have an option of being with my kids. They are only 2 years old and 3 months old. I want to be able to spend as much time with them as possible right now and I want to go to med school when they older like eighteen and sixteen. What is the likelyhood of being accepted into medical school and how would you go about doing that. My goal is to become a Pathologist.

You won't want to go to medical school in sixteen years. You won't want to incur the debt or put in the hours required, or take crap off of people a decade younger than you!

I'd say you need to make the decision now. If you want to be a doctor, you will spend less time with your family but will have a higher income. If you follow through with your PA plans, you'll have a decent income, but less stress and more time at home.

Discuss it with your wife; you'll need her supprt either way.

I agree with Jerry P on all he said. I know a dad who actually went in his 40's, opened up a successful practice, but then got diagnosed with cancer. Within 2-3 years, he died, leaving behind a successful practice to be handled by the wife who ended up hiring physician/s and is doing very well.

Jerry is right about the stress factor. It can really heighten any genetic predisposition to cancers (and other illnesses) since in middle age, your lifestyle tends to amplify any genetic predispositions you may have to illness. Just make sure if you have a long term goal like that, that you remain as healthy as possible by daily exercise. You're going to PA school; I assume you know about health maintenance... :) Be sure it's all worth it at the end--that you did your best on YOUR PART to ensure a happy ending. Hey, if anything happens, you know you tried your prevention and did your best.

I want to add: also learn now before PA school (to use throughout your years) how to handle stress and meditation techniques. Stress is a human response.

Good luck. You can do it!

So, you are in your early 20's now, I would guess. That would put you in your late 30's when you start medical school. It has been done, but it is rare. Most people have enough life experience by then that they are unwilling to stomach the heirarchical and all-consuming demands of medical education, much less the grueling residency training that follows. If your credentials are good, and if your MCATs are current and high, there is a pretty good chance of being accepted when that time comes.
