absolutely not. That would be illegal and a reason to suspend the dr.s license. The only exception to this would be if you are a participant in a study and have agreed to be kept from knowing whether you are getting the medication or the placebo.

I have been told my the medical professionthat it is illegal for a doctor to give you prescribed medication without telling you exactly what it is and what it is used for. Sometimes when there is a trial for a new drug or procedure a placebo may be used but this is to track the effectiveness of the new medication versus the placebo. If you are signed up for these clinical trials it can be either way. Even the doctor is not aware of which medication you are being given. The placebo as well as the original trial medication. You will be made aware of the fact that you might be getting the placebo as well as you might be getting the original new medication being tested.

Ethically placebos are only used in case studies regarding new drug therapies, etc. And of course then the point is not to tell the patient.
