By Springfield M1A1 I am assuming you are talking about the Springfield M1A semi-auto 7.62x51mm rifle. If you are using a Super Match or a M25 or M21 then I would say it is possible if not probable as the effective range of the M21, the M1A's military predecessor, is 750 yards although a great marksman can always stretch the established limits of a weapon. Using the higher quality heavy match brrels and hot loads, along with a target that is at a lower elevation than your shooting position I assume you may be able to squeeze it, if you are one of the greatest marksmen in the world.

With a different firearm, chambered in .300WM, or .338 Lapua, or a .50 BMG Barrett, model M82A1, M95, or a M95 you'll have better luck.

Bound's hubby here:

Presuming you mean the Springfield Armory M1A rifle in either National Match or Super Match form, the answer is a qualified NO!

When you use either of the two military match loads (M852=168 grain MatchKing or M118LR=175 grain MatchKing) these bullets go sub-sonic (below 1121 fps) not too far past the 1000 yard mark (about 900 meters). In order for a bullet to be controllable, the bullet has to stay super-sonic (above 1121 fps). If you were to handload a 180, 190 or 200 grain MatchKing you might be able to keep it super-sonic a little bit farther than 1000 yards.

With available match loads and the M1A, if you were to have: your lucky rabbit's foot, a shaman, a truck load of four leaf clovers, a leaprachaun in shackles, a St. Christopher's medal, and a company of angels behind you... you might be able to hit a man-sized target at 1500+ meters 1 in 10 times... but I wouldn't bank your worst enemy's farm on it!

Good luck!

the 30 cal ball round is very acurate long range and has been used in national matches at camp perry oh for years mine has minute of angle accuracy. 1500 meters is a long ways but with a good rest and a target the size of a auto a marksman should be able to consistantly stay on target

Don't remember the max effective on that weapon, but I figure you could hit(Not "take out", but hit) a target at 1500m if it was the size of the International Space Station.

Other than that, you're fooked.

The effective range of the M1 and its variants is 200 - 300 yards.

The odds of hitting anything at 1500 meters is zero.

Only way you could hit a target from 1500 meters is if it was 1500 meters straight below you.
