I am 74; I have had what is labeled schizophrenia since 1960. One can live a relatively normal life with medications, therapy by proffesionals and self control and self analysis. When I first had it I was in the military and it was severe. It was severe for the first few years but luckily I was able to get help from the VA and meds which help control the hallucinations. I was able to work in my proffesion for 15 years and, in addition attended several universities.
The label schizophrenia is scientifically meaningless. It only serves to cancel the life of the person to which it is applied as you can see by some of the negative comments about it that have been made here. A number of British psychiatrists have started a group, The Committee for the Abolition of the Schizophrenia Label, CASL and a few suggest using the term Dopamine Dysfunction Disorder, DDD, instead of Schizophrenia Paranoia for it. That is more scientifically descriptive of the probable physical nature of the disease.
I say probable because I still have doubts that it is all "in my head" due to the fact it comes on suddenly, is not one voice but many and they are unwelcome and so loud sometimes they force one to one's knees.Quite unlike the friendly little voice of one's own thinking. Besides, I have in addition had "poltergeist like" hallucinations whch are not controlled by meds and have been witnessed by others.
Whatever it is it needs more attention and research and the patients, many of whom are homeless, need support!

schizophrenia is a disease of the brain. A mental disorder that usually causes psychosis--breaks with reality. People who are schizophrenic hear voices, see things that aren't there. It's a very sad disease. But with the new medications, more people are being helped. The old meds had terrible side effects that often times, the disease was easier to deal with than the meds. But there are better meds for it now.
I had a friend who had this disorder. The meds she was taking were hurting her liver. The doctor told her to stop the meds. She told the doctor, "I'd rather die of liver failure than go crazy again."
Tells you something about how difficult having this disease is for people and their family members.

It is a behaviour disorder.1% of the world population suffer from this disorder.Various theories like dopamine disruption, frontal lobe shrinking etc are bandied about but with 30% of patients donot get any relief from the ATYPICAL medication available to modern psychiatry.Ofcourse old TYPICAL medications have lot of sideffects.
symptoms vary from individual to individual. But they are broadly clubbed as positive and negative symptoms.Seeing hallucinations, hearing voices, smelling things which others donot feel, feeling heat and coldness etc are the main symptoms.Suspicion is a fall out of this. Normally a schizophernic hates the person they loved before the onset of the discease like parents incase of children and spouces incase of married.
CLOZAPINE is the best drug available for this condition at present inspite of a very rare sideffect agranulocytosis.
30% go back to normal life with very litlle disability and i hope your loved one falls into this category.40% live a life of lifelong medication and disability.
Early intervention has better prognosis. A combination of drugs, cognitive behaviour therapy along with a very patient, sufferring home can see through the person .
As it is very difficult to ACCEPT this discease, i will advice the family to go to all pilgrimage centres early and come to accept the inevitablity of the discease if you are in the bottom 70%.
