~Given that the superstitious hoi poloi needed some explanation as to why their all-powerful Wunderkind was making such an absymal mess of things, man had to create another (almost as) all-powerful foil to the Big Guy. The rest is (mythological) history. Hey, Odin had his Loki, Osiris had his Anubis and Zeus had his Pluto. The Jews (and their Christian offspring) had to keep up with the Jones's.
May Goobleskeera bless you and keep you.

that's a really interesting question.I'm a Christian, and I often wonder some of the same things.
According to the Bible, the Devil is a fallen angel ( you may already know this, sorry if so) meaning he was once cool with God and then drama went down and he got thrown out of heaven. So I'm presuming the evil that he does on earth is just to spite God. It's pretty pointless because in the end God's going to win, but sure seems like the devil's doing a good job making a big mess of the world right now eh?
Also, I think the devil's main goal is just to counteract everything God. Although causing people to become un-believers is probably part of this, I think he also messes with believers just as much, if not more.
I know one thing, when we die I think we'll know a lot more about all of this then we do now.
hope this helps, good luck finding answers : )

the devil is not gaining power by turning people away from christ, he is merely trying to bring along as many people as he can for the ride.
You're right in your thinking that satan can't win over God. This is a spiritual battle that has been going on since before the begining of time (literally) when the world ends, satan will be thrown into the pit of fire, or whatever Hell turns out to be, he will not be "lord" of hell, he will be burning up right alongside all those people he lied to. Satan mad a brutal mistake a long time ago, and he's just making a last ditch attempt before it's all over.
this is a 2 sided coin though, keep in mind that to understand all this, you should be looking to what God is doing in all this, and what he did, and why. probe both sides of the fence, if only for the sake of getting the whole story.
God bless!

Actually the devil does not need to make people un-believers. All he needs to do is make them not have a personal relationship with Jesus. By personal relationship I mean, accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior, read the Bible every day, pray every day, allow The Holy Spirit to lead them in every decision, tell others about Jesus, and try not to sin, if you do sin ask for forgiveness and move on.
He does this to spite God, and populate Hell.
He knows he cant win, but he sees every lost soul as a victory.
His punishment the same as others--eternity separated from God, in a place filled with unquenchable fire, wailing and gnashing of teeth, and no contact with others.
He knows his fate, and just does not care.
I spent 18 years serving Satan with all I had, and I thought I knew all his tricks, but he is doing somethings now that has never been done before, because he knows time is short, and Jesus will soon be coming for his bride, the Church.

The devil's goal IS to make us NOT believe God's promises to us ..or a least make us doubt that we are included in His love and promises.
I don't know why he does this in light of the fact that hell was created only for him and his angels. It wasn't God's intent that people would follow the devil in this life and right on into hell when this life is over.
Theory has it that the devil hates God so much that he goes after God where it hurts; he wants hurt God's creation and primarily the people God created. Consider how hurt we would be if someone hurt our children.
There is not a lot said about the devil in the Bible. Most of what people believe is what writers of fiction have written about him.

The devil as it goes became angry and jealous of mankind because God favored man above the angels. The devil (Lucifer) started a rebellion against God to take his place. The rebellion of course failed and Lucifer and his minions defeated by Jesus and the archangels were forced to roam the Earth until judgement when they would be cast into Hell as described in the Revelation of St. John the Divine. The Devil knows that is a book of prophecy so maybe he thinks he can still defeat Jehovah.
Satan takes people under his wing by sin for he knows that the end result of sin is misery and regret and the abscence of God in one's life. The Bible is a guidebook for how to live a simple, peaceful and worry free life.
Being embittered by the whole thing Lucifer decided that he would use the free will God gave mankind against mankind and take as many people into hell with him as he could. Thus a new war began between Jehovah and Lucifer a war for souls. God sent his son Jesus as a means to defeat Satan. With Jesus' death a new covenenat was formed so that people could have an example and so that we would have an advocate to speak for us on the day of Judgement.
There are hints of this in the Bible it's discussed in detail in the Apocalypse of Moses and other Gnostic texts. It seems to explain a lot.
Satan is an ancient term for adversary, Lucifer is said to be his true name.

It is just for spite. He knows how much God cares about everyone. He lost when Jesus died on the cross. He has nothing else to lose. It is just a matter of time before he is destroyed. So his biggest goal in life is to hurt God as much as he can. I think in the back of his mind he also thinks, maybe if I have enough, I can beat Him. So yeah, he fully understands his final outcome. The Bible says that the devil knows his time is short. That's why he is so mad about it. But you need to be careful to not get too interested in Satan. If he thinks he is invited into your life, he will do anything he can to make it miserable. I hope this helps.

Well this is going to take some time but as you want good answers i will try.Firstly we are born non believers So we have free will to choose to believe or not it is said back before life as we know it there were angels this included the devil and jesus the devil wanted more power and god would not give it to him so the devil and his followers were sent to earth from heaven .The devils job now is to convince others not to believe just as jesus was sent to make us believe .So the devil has every right to claim any non believers and will use any tactic he can to stop you from believing and then belong to him just the same christians think jesus has every right to spread his word accross the nations to make people believe they then belong to him he is their lord .The devil is really the lord of darkness but christians dont give him the honour of the title lord they call him the prince of darkness and jesus the lord of light. As you say God is all so powerfull he has set a time for the end of life as we know it and the devil will be given time to collect those who belong to him and in theory then they will all burn in hell only believers will be brought back to life but not as we are now although others will disagree with me but My understanding is that when jesus becomes lord of those on earth or in heaven there would be no male or female simply because there would be no sickness or death and so we do not have to replace ourselves and because a man or woman married more than once they would have more then one wife or husband which is against gods law ..

For one thing the devils main goal is not to make people un-believers. People for the most part are all ready un-believers. He just wants to keep them that way. I don't think the devil is trying to win anything. He simply opposses God on every front. I believe that he will be punished along with un-believers and all the fallen angels that followed him. I don't believe he thinks so however. Just my opinion.

Shalom,
The devil/Satan or what ever you wish to call it, is nothing more than a gravity upon the mind that keeps man bound to his organic conscious or as referred to "Outer Darkness". This world is the left hand of correction or God's school house. Where man is tried and tested until he is fit to sit on the right hand of God again. This takes many lifetimes and most of the time the majority makes snail gains because they become caught up in paths that alienated them from higher realities.
Peace
Aza
lol bcptm, the greek gods are only allegorically portraying realities in your own mind. It is the spiritually disenfranchised man that takes those allegorical symbols and tries to make them into idols he worships.
