In a way, it is superfluous.....except that we have been commanded to baptize others.
I see the Bible saying that baptism is a means of grace. That is, that through baptism we recieve God's grace. We receive this grace also through the promises of God in His word.
1 Peter 3:20-22
God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also-not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand-with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
(from New International Version)
Note it says "Also......saves"

According to Baptists you do not need to be baptized to be saved, and that is also what the Bible teaches.

That's not why "Baptists" are called "Baptists" ... they are called "Baptists" because they only baptize adults.
But back to your question--the thief that was dying on the Cross next to Jesus was granted salvation by Christ, yet he (at least we assume) was not baptized. So that is Biblical evidence to support that Baptism is not a requirement for salvation.

No, Baptists do not see baptism as a "completion" of salvation. It is a statement of faith that follows a commandment of God.

A Sacrament is a know means by which God's grace is dispensed for the gift of life.
It is Satanic to proclaim another man condemned. As many as I say this thing to, and believe the truth, pay heed unto it.

Baptism is the public profession of faith. It is the ritual that FOLLOWS salvation of the eternal soul by accepting Jesus, the Son of the one true God as Savior.
No such thing as "partial saved". Salvation is all or nothing.

It is just extra. It is a public expression that you have gotten saved. It is a symbolic death to your old life and a beggining of your new spiritual life.
