Yes, maybe, no? All three of them could be correct. It is always a possibility but does not always happen. When you pop your knuckles the reason they pop is that a pressure builds up within the joint until it exceeds a certain amount and nitrogen is released as a gas and that is the pop you hear. When you do this a stretch is being put on the supporting structures of the joint - the joint capsule and ligaments. Repeated overstretching of these structures can lead to injury. That is why those who crack their joints a lot have larger knuckles - it is because scar tissue is forming to help support the joint because of the extra mobility gained by repeated cracking. This can also lead to difficulty with doing certain activities that involve a sustained grip because you require more muscle activity to support your hand because the ligaments have been stretched out to where they cannot give any support. If you have to do it every once in a while you will probably be okay but do not make a habit of it. Just try and stretch your fingers and hand which you can do without having to crack your joints.

There is barely even anecdotal evidence to support this claim.

The only test I have ever heard about (as a dedicated knuckle cracker) was a guy who cracked the knuckles of one hand twice a day for 20 or 30 years (can't remember which) and suffered only about a 25% decrease in grip strength over that time. No arthritis.

Of course, you can take it with a grain of salt given that my evidence started with "I heard about a guy..."

Even so, it seems to be an urban myth. I have been cracking my knuckles for 15 years at least and no arthritis, pain or even noticible decrease in grip strength.

Yes. I know it does because I am 21 and I have been popping my knuckles since I was like 12 and I have mild arthritis and my fingers are slightly bigger than they should be. I'm not sure why but I think someone told me once that there is fluid in your joints and when you pop your knuckles you are releasing the fluid in your joints. The lacking of fluid causes the pain of arthritis.

It hasn't been proven,I've popped my knuckles since I was little(I'm now 24) and I can't even curl my hair without my hands hurting. I'm a mechanic as well its hell trying to turn wrenches or screwdrivers especially in the cold. Now I try not to pop them because it hurts i just pull on them so my bones aren't rubbing.

I found this statement online: There is no evidence that cracking one's knuckles can cause arthritis directly. However, repeated injury of a joint or repeatedly causing it to swell can injure the cartilage and potentially lead to degenerative joint disease.

Absolutely not. The popping sound is excess nitrogen leaving your body. It slowly builds up in your blood and escapes through your joints .Its a natural occurrence. When a diver gets the bends ,its from the water pressure rapidly building up nitrogen in the blood and then the rapid realize of the water pressure causes the nitrogen to explode out of the joints.

According to my daughters Rhuemetoid Arthritis Specialist. Yes, it can cause swelling which makes the knuckles larger, also the fluid at the joint get irritated which can cause harm.

No, that is a myth. Popping your knuckles causes air bubbles in the fluid surrounding your joints to pop.

No popping your knuckles can't cause arthritis....the popping sound is the release of carbon dioxide from your joints that collects possibly beacuse of anaerobic repiration (muscles give off carbon dioxide when they used a lot)
