In my neighborhood we've been having an ongoing problem with cruelty to animals. Intentional cruelty. Recently a neighbor noticed that her cat's tail had a funny "kink" to it. She took it to the vet and he discovered that fish line was imbedded in the tail (which was broken) and had formed a scar ring. Apparently some form of intentional mistreatment (likely swinging or throwing) was done. On Halloween people set a cat on fire (gasoline) and let it run down the street...it was found eventually under a deck but didn't make it. It died an agonizing death. These are just a few of many incidents. Why is this happening???? I can't for the life of me understand why people would go out of their way to harm an animal?

It's the same in my neighborhood. It's so sad. I've recently set up a website aimed at getting some kitties that live on the street near my place into homes. It has live streaming video of the kitties needing homes at night, and my kitties in the day. People are even mean to me for trying to help these cats, including people here at Answers.I'm paying for the desexing, vaccinations, aids & FelV testing etc.... the site is http://www.kittiesinthehood.com
I have already adopted 8 myself, and really need help with the other 12!
Here they are poisoned, kicked, have things like eggs thrown at them and hit by cars....which is why I couldn't leave them out there, but I REALLY NEED HELP Cause now I've taken them all in from the street but can't find them forever homes!

That is criminal and shocking. You need to report this to the ASPCA and they will investigate. If no one does anything, another animal may be tortured as well. Sadly, this is a sick society, and this is not a just world. I do not see any reason why that act should not lead to a life sentence in prison, but sadly many a criminal are on the books clean especially when not caught. We also see a reflection of the lack of compassion, honesty and integrity toward not only animals but people even by those who are governing the rules in this country. Somedays I really question the injustice of the justice system and I hope god in the end will bring the ultimate hand of justice .

The sucky part is, that when people are cruel to animals, as in burning one alive or doing whatever they damn well please just because they're bored, nothing is done about it unless that person or persons are caught. Or at least that's what I believe, though I could be mistaken.
It sickens me to know how cruel people can be, espeically to an animal that has no way of defending itself (a kitten, a puppy, etc) and god knows if I could, a ******* GENOCIDE would occur because I am tired of these people -- MAINLY KIDS -- who find it hilarious to watch a cat screaming while its flesh burns off its bones.
CF: But indoor cats have the risk of escaping by accident, and CatHabitats aren't always the best answer as I've learned you can't really controll where a feline goes, and where it does not.

Remember the 'good ole days' of "an eye for an eye" !?
To me... if you mistreat an animal, ANY animal... you should get exactally what you have done to that animal ! I just read one, of a kitten that was seen being thrown out of a moving car, doing around 80 mph !!! Thank God, the little one survived, and was taken in to be cared for...... but to me......... the person that 'dished it out'... should get it dished right back, in the same mannor !! Maybe a few examples of 'that', would set some of these people straight !

This is sick behavior from people who know no better. Perhaps your neighbourhood could keep pets indoors until events like Halloween are over. Maybe a group of residents could start an undercover patrol.

If it is happening often enough, try capturing the culprets on video camera. Many of the things that they are doing are felony offenses. A good video showing proof of what they are doing will curb their actions real quick once the cops get ahold of it.

this is happening becuase people are growing increasingly disgusted with people allowing their cats to roam the neighbourhoods...
a responsible cat owner would keep their cat indoors OR build it a safe cat run
this is also happening more and more becuase of stress in the human society - some people look for ways to take their anger out on weaker people or animals.. if we took steps back to reduce stress it would help - human over population is the #1 stress..
competeting to "have it all" is another...

i honestly don't know what would posses these people to commit such crimes.. since they have no respect for animal life, they must have no respect for human life either .. and you know who those people are? killers.. who end up in jail.. and i think the same thing that happens to people who kill human life should happen to the people who intentionally cause cruelty, pain, suffering, and death to animals...
