Which is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus? Nikon or Canon? These are all unanswerable questions as they are all "the best" in their class, depending who you ask.

If you have no personal preference, perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.

For your request for a camera somewhat above a typical point and shoot, I'm going to agree with those recommending a Canon S3-IS. There are 2 or 3 similar cameras that are sort of in between the typical P&S and DSLR's and I've done a comparison for several askers here already and I always come up suggesting the S3-IS.

Each of these cameras has an in-depth review that you can read from this page. Be sure to read the entire article for each camera and not just the introductory page.

You can also click on the link to read owner opinions for each camera.

The Panasonics are a waste of a good lens in front of a bad sensor ("unquote") and seem to have real problems with noise artifact. See the last paragraph on this page: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz7/page14.asp

The Canon LCD pops out and swivels, which opens up a lot of photographic opportunities. See: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons3is/page14.asp

My adult daughter has a Canon S2 IS and just loves the camera, to add a personal spin to this answer.

Never touch Kodak. If you want expensive high-end, Canon is the best. If you want something middle of the road, Sony. If you want something cheap, the Canon Powershot is a good camera. I would stay within Panasonic or Canon if you're looking at a camera below $400. With Sony cameras, you pay for quality. The less you pay, the worse the camera is. Don't expect good pictures out of a Kodak. Once you use a good camera you'll know how aweful a kodak looks. One touch cameras are never good.
It really does depend on how much you want to spend and what you intend on using it for.

It depends on what you want to do. I think for simplicity and ease of use if you don't know much about them and don't want to learn, you can't beat a Kodak. I like the high end point and shoot cameras...with big zoom and all of the features, bells, & whistles. For those I've owned both an Olympus and Sony. They are both awesome cameras.

The Canon S3 IS. Its a good learning camera that offer you a lot of manual control. You will like the 12X zoom and the IS. Image quality is superb too.

I like Canon, I know you are not looking for the SLR combo but that is totally what I would recommend...

I have two Canons (a "pocket" and one with interchangable lens). I love them. I just got my sister one for xmas.

They also rate very high on consumer reports.

I'm happy with my Sony.
It has a zoom, a flash and takes great
pictures .
You can put it on auto or manual for
settings.
