The basis of all software programming is the underlying logic. Once you have good logic skills, the rest is merely putting that logic into the correct syntax of the language you want to program in. So, train yourself in getting the logic of a software problem correct.

To improve your software skill you can join jobs where development work is done.You can hardly develop your software skill if you do a maintenanace job in IT.

If you want to get into software industry then 1st choose line of business you want to enter (like C++, Java, ERP, DBA, Mainframes etc) then learn concept about those.
Other than that work on following.
1. Software engineering concepts. (including quality concepts)
2. Work on verbal English communication skills.

Practice ... you will need to practice.. almost every good software comes with user guides and help .. so you can read that for information on using the application.
