Easy; this is talking about church goers patting each other on backs and saying how great we all are and so much better than all them not in our church. They praise each other and seek praise from each other rather than standing alone for what you know is God's will, and what the Bible actually teaches rather than any religious slant your church gives the Bible, these so called creeds and dogmas, here is what John the Baptist said about them same people; Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
And Jesus in another place talking about the same people; 29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
reading the 2 previous verses help explain it better; 42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

See the people did not believe in Jesus so they will die in their sins.
All churches today are following a man's ideas rather than God's word which says to unite under the promises of God, but they all claim to be the only true way to salvation. And will fight and kill people that disagree, as it was in the days of Cain and Abel, or Jesus and Judas

Read the context in which it is written. In verse 18, they were questioning whether he was the Son of God and whether he considered himself equal to God. They also chastised him for healing on the sabbath and he explained in verse 17 that his Father had not quit working, so why should he. In this scripture he was stating that they couldn't believe him if they didn't believe the scriptures and his fathers word that testified to who he was because they were seeking the approval of men rather than the approval of God. As to his equality to the father, he makes it clear in verse 19 that he could only do as his father directed him to do. The scripture that you had a question emphasizes this, compare John 17:3. Look to the word of God and make prayerfull consideration of what you read rather than to any man made religious organization. I'm a former Jehovah's Witness and after extensive study of the bible I found that very few religions, including JW's especially practice what the bible teaches. True religion only exists as your personal relationship with God, and mans personal opinion does not matter at all. Consider Prov 2:1-5 and you will see that God is the only source for true knowledge, not man and if you truly search for it, you will find it. Also, if a JW knocks on your door, take it from experience, do not answer. Also, for a better understanding of true scripture, order a 1901 American Standard Version from www.allbibles.com, it's the most accurate, untampered with translation available but it's only available by special order. People are too busy getting patted on the back by one another that they forget what God expects of them and fail to do it.

Let's say you fast talk and hoodwink someone into coverting. That will bring you praise from your peers your fellows, but does God appreciate your "whole life insurance salesmanship."

God doesn't want quanity, he wants quality. God would rather see you fail with 100 people and bring in 1 honest soul who truly believes and wants to be a part willingly and honestly.

I have a friend who is a lost soul. He's Jewish and he tried everything to find his way, then he tried Jesus.

He got "converted" and the Born Again House was praised for converting a Jew, but he wasn't converted. Not when I saw him. He didn't have the lord. He had the Bible in his hands, fear in his voice and the shakes.

He was NOT a found soul.

God doesn't want that.

God wants to see him SO SURE that even the house leader would have problems dealing with his zealousness and rightousness!

That is NOT what I saw.

I saw the same unsure, scared, half-hearted person who was trying to get Arthur Janov to take him on as a psychiatric client.

I don't know about today, I just know what I saw when I saw it.

I consistently advise that Christians initiate with the hot testomony. each and each Gospel might desire to be studied intently; then, pass directly to the Pauline and Hebrew Epistles. besides the shown fact that, i do no longer advise that a sparkling Christian study Revelation, because of fact a thourough expertise of the completed Bible (extremely the OT) is needed with the intention to appreciate it. religious adulthood is needed, additionally -- it relatively is something a sparkling Christian won't yet have. To my view, a individual shouldn't study Revelation till they have study the completed Bible a minimum of as quickly as, such as the main and minor prophets (extremely Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah and Daniel) numerous circumstances. that's the only e book interior the completed Bible that contains a blessing for examining and information it -- because of fact God knows that the reader might desire to understand His word previously it relatively is significant. study classes or communities could be useful, yet make certain to ask a mature, Bible-believing Christian for coaching first. there are various study classes that are extra suitable left on my own, in case you recognize my meaning ... it may additionally be useful to purchase scholarly books, which includes Wayne Grudem's 'Systematic Theology,' it relatively is a classic. Scriptural exegesis is a found out skill and does not come clearly to maximum folk.

The Pharisees, whom Jesus was speaking to, thought they knew everything there was to know about God and religion, But they were arrogant, proud men, full of themselves.
Jesus was saying they loved to be congratulated by each other for how spiritual they were, but totally missed the point - the real honor comes from God when we are humble before Him.
It's a good idea to read the whole story to get the meaning. Don't just pick a verse out of context - sometimes you will get confused.

That is the Jewish religious self-righteous who didn't accept Jesus Christ & couldn't believe because their glory came from fellow religious self-righteous. They didn't have the love of God in themselves so didn't seek Gods Glory.

Simply put, it means mankind will fail to see (lose focus/believe) the glory that comes from God when they spend their time patting each other on the back.

It means instead of relying on each other for glory us people, which we are not really giving each other or capable of making. True glory only comes from God. God is the true giver of glory and he is the only one who really is able to make us feel glorious from our soul. God is the only one who can put it there.

In putting this question are you not seeking glory from your fellow man rather than giving it to God?

Drop the ego trip and pray and worship.
