ok so i was at work today and suddenlt we started talking about religion, then about americans, this co-worker who is very religious and open minded said she does not know why people get mad when there are other races in america because everyone that lives, moves to america is american, i told her i disagree, i told her i only consider whites (causcasian ) americans(unless they have moved from russia ,etc.. i said this because i am cuban and i consider myself hispanic, i am an american citizen, but i dont consider myself american, and i do not consider other races americans other than the white, the woman called me a skin head and went around telling people i work with about this, she said it offended her,.but she is not a minority and my black friends do not consider themselves americans either, they say they are african americans, or just african.. so what do you think, i mean in cuba you are not considered cuban even if youn have a citizen ship unless you are actually born there

ack, people trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

First of all, if you have citizenship in America then you are an American. That is a statement of nationality, in a blind open market of verbage. End of story.

Now there are differing classifications for one Haplop or another for very stupid political reasonings. But the bare facts of your situation you described was you simply being ignorant of facts and proper speech.

Whether you are black or white or red or green, if you are a civilized person attempting to survive in a civilized world you absolutely need to understand the difference between American Citizenship and Citizenship Race Classification. If you are going to attempt to speech about sensitive subjects with a blind eye to the law, then you have absolutely no need to even say a word.

Just because someone says they are an African-American or an Asian-American does not make them any less American. They ARE American. And to deny anyone their rights because of their heritage is called race biasness. You demonstrated a fine example of racial biasness, even if you didn't mean to.

Firstof all by Governmental Census reasonings, hispanics are considered white.....unless they have another classification they fall under. The proper term is Caucasian Hispanic. (unless you have a heritage that prooves you are not white, you are Spanish in origin and contrary to popular belief Spain is part of Europe and are all Caucasian.

European decendants are all considered Caucasian....in American layman terms, White.
African decendants in America are properly called African American, even if their family lineage comes from Haiti or Jaimaica....just accept it, that's the way it is.
Asian decendants in America are all considered Asian Americans.
Native American or "Indian" as called incorrectly are all classified as Native American and sometimes a specific tribe might be mentioned depending.

As you said the only "real" Americans are whites is a racial statement. That is a statement one might expect to hear from the Klu Klux Klan or from 1950's WASPs. And I believe you are neither.

I understand your clarification of American Citizen and American, but what makes the white so different than any other division? Why not say the Native Americans are the only true Americans? In order to understand your thought you need to explain why you think this, otherwise everyone around you willl begin to think the same thing about you. what you are descibing is a culture difference that does not translate well from one community to another.

More than likely you will not be fired, you may be written up if it is a strict social political environment you work within. But in most circumstances it is a non-firing offense. It is however an offense that could demand counciling and I would urge you to attend this counciling class if it is offered.

But I will say that now something has brought you to the attention of other supervisors. You can bet your sweet @ss they are talking about you and watching you to see if this sort of behavior is becoming a problem for others in the workplace. I would definitely mind your P's and Q's.

I have never really given this any thought. I am an american born and raised in this country but I feel that everyone deserves a fair shot and if moving here and becoming an american by relocating helps people to achieve this then that is great. But just because you weren't born here doesn't mean you are any less of an american than those of us who were. It is how much you believe in and love being free that helps make you the american that you are or aren't. To answer the rest of your question, no I don't think you can be fired over this and your co-worker needs to get a grip and learn when not to repeat things and to stop humiliating people. Best of luck. Hope this helps you out.

To start with and for future reference, unless you work in a church, talking religion is out, as is race and politics. The others have posted my thoughts on the subject of who is an American and who is not, almost. An American is a citizen of the United States, either born in the boundaries, to an American parent where they are currently living within it’s borders or not, or naturalized. As America is a melting pot of races, cultures and beliefs, we all fit in somewhere, even if others don't like it that we do.

She said it offended her and called you an insulting name? Then went about complaining and YOU are worried? Soccerqt, that woman is not very religious and open-minded, as you say of her, if this was her attitude; most religions put forth the idea of ‘do no harm‘, in one way or another and for those who want to argue that point, I did say MOST. Yet she took what sounds like an obvious course of telling your co-workers of your discussion and called you an offensive appellation. She did harm in more than one manner and sowed dissention in the work place at the same time she called you an insuting racist name if you are Hispanic.

You remember, a skin head is commonly a Caucasian that does not believe the other races are more than the lower orders and either need eliminated or subjected as the workers. Hitler youth, Oklahoma City and such, doncha know!

Your grievance could be taken to the manager/supervisor/boss/ or whoever, prior to this 'wronged woman', or brought up when he/she decides to speak to you, if they do. Americans are supposed to have the privilege of free speech to discuss such things as race and beliefs, yet you were in an employment situation. If you work for a large company, then you have written rules that you can access to see if there is a bar to discussing certain matters during the hours you are working, If a smaller company, then surely the person that hired you gave you these guidelines, and if they didn't, don't forget to remind them of that if there is a disciplinary discussion or something further. There are recourses for being dismissed for this sort of thing, if the matter were to be taken to that extreme.

The most probable sequence of events will be that the whole thing blows over by the next work day, but if not and the woman continues to blacken you in this unseemly fashion, request an apology from her…in front of your co-workers that she has been talking to. But do it at a time that you couldn’t be considered on the clock, such as a lunch break.

And remember, you are from Cuba and living in America as an American citizen, you are an American regardless of race, culture or creed. I was born in Colorado State of parents that had blood of numerous peoples in their veins and only the Comanche was truly American, the others were from Europe in several different countries. I’m American, as are you.

I have lower than no situations somewhat given this any theory. i'm an american born and raised in this us of a although i experience that each and each and every human being advantages a real looking shot and if moving accurate right here and setting up an american with techniques from way of shifting helps persons to take action then this is passable. yet only thinking that you've been not born accurate right here doesn't advise you're any a lot less of an american than those those who've been. that is how a lot you concentrate on in and love being free that helps make you the american that you're or do not look. to reply the relax of your question, no i do not think you'd be able to be fired over this and your co-worker demands to get a grip and learn even as to not repeat concerns and to renounce humiliating persons. best of fulfillment. wish this helps you out.

An American is an American citizen - no matter what race they are.
I'm part Native American and part European-American.

I only refer to myself as an American. I don't feel the need to express my genetic heritage unless the topic comes up in discussion. It has nothing to do with being proud or not proud - since I am only here because my parents were here.

I feel most Americans should focus on their responsibilities - rather than what their "rights" are and maybe this country would get along better with everyone.

Why would someone's race effect whether or not they are American? I think most black citizens of this country consider themselves American, even though they might call themselves African-American. It's just a way of referring to your heritage rather than your skin color (since all dark skinned people aren't actually from Africa). I would describe myself as Irish-American, but I would be pretty pissed if you told me I wasn't American just because I identify with my Irish ancestry. If you are a citizen of America, you are American. I think it is pretty silly to think only white people are American. After all, the people who are originally from this continent aren't white.

Anyway, about work... it depends on what kind of job you have. If you are an at will employee and your boss thinks you are racist or offensive, they can fire you whenever they want. But if you have a contract, I don't think what you said is cause for discipline.

Darling, I'm sure you didn't mean anything bad by what you said, but you are very, very confused and just plain wrong. Being American is not about race. It's about whether you were born in America or have become a naturalized citizen. It doesn't matter how it is in other countries. It matters how it is here in America. That's it. Period. Now, however you choose to refer to yourself is up to you, but don't make those same references to others. No you won't lose your job. Probably at worst, you'll get called into the office and just told to be more careful about what you say and how you say it and to just not say stuff like this. And.... at the very worst, it could go down on your record as a verbal warning.

I do not think you are a racist. Your nationality is what country you were born in, if you were born in the US then yes, you are in fact an american. If you were born in Cuba, youre a Cuban. If you were born in Cuba and moved to America then you are still Cuban. If your family is Cuban but you were actually born in America, you are .an American. with your heritage being Cuban.

Why would you ever consider white people to be the only americans? What about the Native Americans who white people killed, cheated and enslaved?

As a manager I would not fire you, but I would advise you and other workers to avoid discussing controversial issues.

As a fellow citizen I would tell you both to shut the hell up, read a good history book and discuss the issue outside of work and leave it there.

I think you can call yourself whatever you want, but give others the same privilege, please. Also, exactly how are caucasians more American than black people or Latinos or whatever? This place was not empty when Europeans got here! Columbus did not discover it and neither did Leif Erickson! It was ALREADY populated! By, if we insist on going by heritage, the only true americans.
