I just got back from Thailand and lived on Samui for two months. Koh Phangan is usually booked because of the fullmoon. Everything online was booked when I went over but when I took the ferry over I found a great place for three nights. I'd stay in Samui and go over on ferry which is an hour long ride, unless you take a speed boat. Once your arrive on the island people are everywhere helping you with places to stay. you need to just really LOOk around.

wel, if there's nowhere on the island to book, try staying in samui, its a half hour away.
try picking up a lonely planet guide to help you more.
