How do we fix the problem? She will lay in the waste. She doesn't care. She loves to be groomed and when that happens she is good for a while then starts up again. I think she knows when she is bad. Could she be doing this for spite?

Thanks for all of the responses. My dog goes to the vet regularly. She has always been this way. The only time she is in the cage is at night, but I do think the problem is, we are not spending enough time with her. She has always soiled in her cage. We have taken it apart to make it larger, smaller. Not sure why she does it. Just wondered if there are any remedies.

Your dog is a senior. Some seniors develop incontinence at this age or later. She needs to be seen by her vet ASAP. She could have a health issue per her age. Please take her to her vet tomorrow. Senior dogs that are housebroken and have been for years will not just start messing in their crates unless they are incontinent. That being said, maybe you are crating her for way too long. Senior dogs should not really be crated all that much. They should be allowed to enjoy the last years of their life freely and comfortably. However, since I am assuming this dog is large like a labrador, maybe she instead is a smaller dog, therefore, they live longer and do not turn senior until age 12 or so.
I hope I have helped.

How,many hours a day does she stay in her cage? How much time do you spend with her out of her cage? A crate is fine for housetraining but they should not spend their lives penned up. The dog is 9 yrs old and isn't housebroken? It is your fault. If she is left in there too long she cannot hold it any longer and will soil her cage.

You might consider taking her to the vet to have her checked for a bladder infection or some other ailment that could be causing this. If this is something she has always done she is probably just lazy and you should be making sure she goes out more often. Especially after she eats and drinks..

a dog should not be in a cage more than 4 hours out of the day! If you don't take her out to use the bath room what do you expect ehr to do! It is unreal that you do not understand this!!
If you don't take her out when she needs to go waht do you expect her to do!!!!!!!!! HOld it for ever? Are yo aware taht tryong to hold tool ong can cause her terrible health problems?
A dog is a living creature. By not taking your dog out so it can use the bathroom you are being cruel and in humane!!! YOur are making your dog suffer. Let see what happens to you if you are not allowed to go to the bathroom when you need to.
ANd if the poor dog has to go in her cage because she is not let out how do you expect her to not lay in it.
Take the poor thing to the humane Society and let them find it a home GOOD home!
Of course she loves to be groomed. Dogs really do like clean. They are made to live in filth so they have to accept it they have no choice. If you allow a dog to leanr to live in a clean enviroment they will prefer it over filth by far!!! YOur dog is just refelcting what you MADE it accept! Filth and suffering

dogs will not soil their den, either you're leaving your dog in the crate for too long or the crate is too big. it sounds to me like your dog is very upset to be in a crate in the first place, maybe you can find a daycare or someone to exercise the dog at your home while you're gone
don't blame the dog...

if she is angry with you spite is a possibility, but I expect it is a age problem. My dog started loseing control of her urine and turned out to be diabetic. Your best bet is to see a vet.

take him/her to the vet poor thing. I'm not trying to scare you but my grandma's old doggy was dying when that was happening but she wouldn't even get off the floor.
