A friend made a simple pound cake according to directions on Swans Down Cake flour box. Per directions, she baked the cake for 60 minutes at 300 degrees, but it burned on on the bottom of pan. She used a heavy Bundt pan and used one of the combination oil/flour spray on the inside to grease and flour pan.

I have made this recipe many times with no problem. The only thing I could think of was the sprays didn't really coat the pan(I generally use butter to coat the pan and then flour it) or that her oven cooks really fast because 300 is really not that high for a cake and 60 minutes is the average time.

Any clues as to what may have happened?

I was thinking the same as Clarkie. Does she have racks in her oven? And did she bake on the middle position?

I know that in my oven, if I cook something on the bottom rack it will burn. My oven is electric and the heating element is on the bottom, so anything close to the bottom burns. That could be part of the reason. Hope this helps.

every stove is different so if she tries to make another try a lower temp or shorter cooking time and if u need to stick ine of those really long toothpick type thins through it all the way to the bottom to check and make sure it's done

all ovens are not accurate temperature. She should get an oven thermometer 300 is a very low tem for a cake, and it shouldn't have burned.

60 minutes sounds way too long to me...

You can cook it too long.
