The rules of etiquette state that you only tell a person when something is wrong like that in private - and then only when it can be corrected immediately. If it can not be corrected without causing public embarassment you shouldn't say anything at all.
Having said that, I think very often people just don't notice. Your girlfriend, wife and mother look you over, because often your appearance can be taken as a reflection on them or they are looking over the home team before you go out in public - that sort of thing.
Hey, if I noticed, I would tell you, if I could do it privately without embarassing you in public.
Peace!

Your's is an interesting question because, years ago, when my secretary first came to the office, she was arranging the files, etc., in order to get her day started, and when she turned around I couldn't help but be very aware that she must have forgotten to button her blouse that buttoned down the back. She was such a classy lady and I had such enormous respect for her that I couldn't bring myself to tell her about her unbuttoned blouse and her exposed bra strap. I knew I wanted to tell her so a client wouldn't come in and see her, but I quickly and anxiously thought about when the other staff members, some of them women, would be arriving and might catch the problem and tell her and fix it. I don't know how the problem got fixed, but later I noticed her blouse was buttoned. Maybe she went into the restroom and saw her situation, or maybe she felt the huge "cold front" all up and down her back, or maybe one of the staff told her, but I've always been a bit ashamed that I, one of her and her husband's best friends, was too taken aback, and maybe shy, to tell her. Oh well, just another one of the screw-ups in my life. God Bless you.

I think it is mainly because people think that others may think they were staring at that area. They do not want to be inappropriate. It is one of those catch 22's. I personally do not have any problems discreetly telling someone that I know their zipper is down, but I think it would be a lot more difficult to tell someone you don't know. After all, the tables could be turned and they ask why you were looking there!

Most people won't tell you because they don't want you to know that they have been looking at your crotch! But you know, it is hard not to see that someone's zipper is open so therefore why not tell them.
There is no shame in me about stuff like that. I don't want to see someone embarrassed so I tell them. Men or women...usually, I get a thanks. Sometimes, I get no response...just ZIP...and their off....
Oh well....at least they aren't walking around flashing everybody.

because it's a potientally embarransing area and it possibly implies sexuality, or perversion of the noticer because the zipper is located right at the crotch. I just say to the unzipped XYZ and they say HUH?

No one wants to admit they were looking down because it may give you the wrong impression...I wouldn't understand why your wife wouldn't tell you, that makes absolutely no sense.

Because it will embarrass you (and them), and they don't want to be the one to do it. It's easier to pretend not to notice.
Same reason they won't tell you you have bad breath or BO or whatever.

Isn't it annoying? But I find when people do tell me its even more annoying. People usually go: xyz or your fly...... and they won't actually say it like they're all embarrased and I respond "good"

they don't want you (or the people around you) knowing there looking at your crotch. and when I notice then it's like everyone around us would know that there fly is down, I would tell them if it were just us, or signal them somehow
do you tell people when their zippers open?
