You know - for the census? David was Joseph's grandfather with about 20 greats or more. What was the point? Why did the Romans create such a mess?

To tax them.

Luke 2:1-3
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

Why? Because he could do nothing else. (even though he didn't know it)!

Because the Romans liked being in charge.
The point was that they WERE in charge, and people had to do what they said, and they wanted people to never forget it. That's why they crucified people - they hung there, in public, for days, suffering, so that other folks would think long and hard about crossing the Romans.

He probably read in the Scriptures at the time where is says that one race shouldn't mix with another and stay in their own lands.
