Am not kidding. When some folks accidentally meet ill-luck, they bemusedly smile at whoever saw them.
a person slips and falls down accidentally, they look around and smile stupidly at whoever saw them fall.
-strong wind blows and exposes a decent lady's undies, she smiles at you.
-a respected gentleman scratches a troublesome itch in his ***, he turns to you and smiles.
-you accidentally run into somebody making love to your sweetie, they are all smiles when they see you.
-a loud fart, accidentally escapes the chairperson of a committee, he smiles at all members.

Are you supposed to return the awkward smile?
It cant be out of embarassment, unless they take you to be an idiot!

i cannot tell you if it's genetics or emotions that cause ppl to smile during embarrassing moments but having gone thru my many embarrassing moments, i can tell you that no matter how much i wanted to disappear or to cry, i too have smiled.....smiling tends to lead to others smiling and as "mom" used to teach us as children......it's better to make light of an embarrassing moment than it is to make a big ordeal outta it.....so i suppose smiling is just a simple way to get others around you to smile too....some may not know how to react to YOUR embarrassing moment and some may want to laugh in your face....and from "mom's teachings"...its better to have them laughing with you than at you....so smiling at your own embarrassment may offer condolences to you and permission to others to smile and/or laugh....heck i dont know one person in all of my 35 yrs that has not gone thru some mortifying experience to where the entire room was in smiles, to include the person totally mortified.
we're not idiots....we're human :0)
take care and smile

There is nothing funnier than when people, with the seriousness of human souls and convictions, get had by the comedy of their fallible bodies and unknowable situations. Don't know why, but it's true.
