If I take one pill of Mucinex, and about 2 cups of water, right before I go to sleep, should I take anything else? Like tylenol, or anything? And I also have VapoRub (by VICKS). Should I put this on my face, and chest and throat?

Also will the Mucinex make me pull, and sneeze out the phlem? Or what will happen?

Accurate answers greatly appreciated.

I'm 15, 5'10, 140 lbs, male if this is needed?

P.S I've had a ******* cold for 4 days now, I just want it to be gone. Stuffy nose, and headace don't help either. I just went that nasty phlem out!!!

Thanks
alex

Mucinex is used as an expectorant...in other words it is used to bring the phlegm up. It's gonna make you cough more but you will bring up more phlegm which will hopefully relieve the chest congestion. If your main goal is to get the phlegm out then you want an expectorant because obviously you want to bring it up and get rid of it.

It sounds like you have some other really annoying symptoms though. It might not hurt to try some saline nose drops if your nose is stuffy (Ocean brand is one kind you can try) and you can use Ibuprofen (Motrin) for the headaches assuming that you respond to that. I recommend you use the saline drops because you don't want to mix too many kinds of cold medicines. If you are on the Mucinex stick to adding things like Motrin for pain but I wouldn't add Nyquil. That has a bunch of ingredients like dextromethorpen and pseudoephedrine I have also heard that using certain things like Vitamin C drops and zinc can help you shorten the length of a cold although I haven't tried those remedies out myself. It makes sense though because they help boost your immune system.

If you feel like the cold is getting worse and your chest hurts, your breathing is more shallow due to the increase in phlegm, you begin running a fever, etc you should get in to see a doctor. Colds can go into bronchitis and sometimes they can even make it into deeper down into your lungs and cause pneumonia. I have been getting bronchitis pretty much every year now since I was 12 and I have had pneumonia about 5 times. I have asthma and allergies so when I get colds I am prone to getting even more sick.

I hope you feel better soon.

I've never used Mucinex, but here's what I do. I have three meds on hand at all times that pretty much take care of any cold or cough combination...
1. Robitussin DM-Tastes like crap, but will stop a cough and chest congestion in its tracks. Good for anyone 2 years to adult.
2. Dimetapp-Great Grape taste, very thin liquid. Great for headcolds (sneezing, stuffy/runny nose, sore throat, sinus pressure/headache). Good for anyone 6 years and up.
3. Tylenol or Motrin-for headaches, body aches, and fever.

Keep in mind, these meds won't make you drowsy, but it will clear your breathing so you can sleep better. You might want to wait till morning and take them on time according to directions all day long, and use the Mucinex at night. Or you can trade the Mucinex for the Robitussin because it seems like they do the same thing. Keep on schedule and you should feel better in less than 48 hours. If you don't, then you have a serious infection and need to go to the doctor.
Good luck to you and Blessings!

Mucinex Expectorant helps loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to rid the bronchial passageways of bothersome mucus and make coughs more productive. Be careful about adding other meds that do the same thing. You can over medicate.Something for fever would be okay. Be sure and read the directions that came with your medication as to drug interactions.

Mucinex is just for congestion. It won't do anything for other symptoms. So, if you have other symptoms, it is okay to take something else, Sudafed or Nyquil so you can sleep.

Don't use any other medications with that, it could mess up the results, but try steaming your face to make it easier to get the gunk out.

A hot steamy shower in the morning will help clear your head as well.
