coffee.
i would be pretty intimidated and weirded out if a random guy approached me and said "wanna go out for a drink?"
i would be more comfortable with coffee because it's more relaxing and you could have a better conversation than in a bar or something like that, when you rely on your drinks to avoid the awkward atmosphere.
it may also give wrong impressions.

Better to ask for coffee, because some people don't like to drink alcohol and they make take it as an offense if you ask them for drinkd right away without even knowing them:)

If you go for coffee you have to deal with your nerves, but you are still your true self.
Go for drinks and all hell can break out. Alcohol is a drug, and a pretty powerful one when it comes to first dates!

drinks usually involve a loud area for conversation. But they do help to loosen you up if you are very nervous. Coffee will provide a quite atmosphere. This is easier to have a conversation in.

It implies that you are an intellectual and open person.
Going out for drinks implies that you like partying and/or want to take advantage of your date's possible inability to hold down his/her drinks.
