We have similar problems here in Australia, and I do understand what you're getting at.
And you're right - it's a lifestyle thing. I don't just mean the diet and exercise thing, either. Things are so different now, even from when I was a kid, and I think people just aren't adjusting very well to this new world of ours.
People have somehow lost the ability to look after themselves. Some are lazy, some are stubborn and selfish, some are just lost, some are caught up in things that they think are so important, when in reality they couldn't be any less important.
If we would all just focus on what is actually important in life, instead of throwing ourselves bodily into the endless pursuit of material ownership, I think we'd all be a lot better off.
There needs to be a gigantic wakeup call....well, actually I think the problems you described in your question are part of that wakeup call, but a hell of a lot of people aren't heeding it.
I think "denial" is a big part of the problem.
I consider myself lucky in that I've devoted a lot of the past four years learning about all aspects of life and what's important, and I hope I'm on the road out of the bullsh*t. It's a bumpy road :)

First of all as far as I know obesity is not a disease but a condition. High cholesterol and diabetes cannot always be controled by just how you eat because they both can be genetic. Hypertension can be genetic. There are many diseases and conditions that many people are predestined toward do to genetics and how they eat may worsen the disease or condition but not cure it or prevent it. I have Hypertension (high blood pressure), High Cholesterol, and Diabetes and am very particular and cautious about my diet and exercise but I still must take medication for all three of these diseases because I was predisposed to them thru my genetics and my diet and exercise alone will not keep them within the normal ranges. All of these things have been known as diseases throughout my life span and I am 50 yrs old.

I honestly believe that the government put something in our water supply.
I used to waitress in a restaraunt where a woman would eat almost everyday. She would come in the door and immediately complain about the smoking section. (imagine screaming banshees) She would then promptly eat 3 appetizers, an entree, and 2 desserts. She was approximately 5 feet tall and I guarantee she weighed over 400 lbs. Somehow I just know that the day she has her first heart attack, she's going to blame second hand smoke.
Not that smoking is good for you or anything, but come on, take a little personal responsibility.
*so awful*

The drug industry is an investment industry. In order to keep increasing profits they need more and more "diseases" in order to sell drugs that palliate symptoms. So now we have "Acid Reflux Disease", High Cholesterol Disease etc. There'll be more.

because if things are diseases, nobody has to take responsibility for their actions. Its like fibromyalgia. its just a catchall for a bunch of non-symptoms, MY doctor calls it the "I don't feel like dealing with the world right now" disease. 20 years ago it was called yuppie flu, and before that, it was called hypochondria. Now, its a disability

If you prepare your food at home and consume it, then obesity will not occur. (Abdominal circumference above 100 cms can be considered as obesity). In fast foods, excess oil & fats are used leading to dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is added in excess which is injurious to health. Antibiotics in low dosages are administered to chickens daily to avoid bacterial infections to them.

Yup, thats us. Fat, lazy and we over indulge in everything we do. Eating, drinking, smoking and pills. If we could do things in moderation we would be a healthier country.

I know, it's very disturbing, and if it's "not" a disease by itself, then it causes cancer, which of course is a disease.
