I can't think of another 80-90 proof liquor where the participants actually sit down, eat spicy stuff and throw 1.5 to 2 ounce shots down their throats until unconscious.
Jagermeister? No. Whisky? No. Tequila? Sure! Make it a double!
The salt and lemon or lime business came about because tequila tastes pretty foul to people unused to its....charm.
Don't forget, it is only recently that tequila took on airs and began barrel aging and such. It used to be homemade white lightning made from cactus! (House rule here is: Cut ALL the citrus and put the knives away. Then drink.)
Taking a pinch of salt, swishing it in the mouth and swallowing once creates a barrier of saliva and stuff that prevents the harsh spirit from tearing your esophagus out.
Following with a bite of lemon or lime kicks in salivary glands to wash the swill down and take the "horse sweat" flavor away.
Here's a bit of trivial for the Mezcal lovers out there (that's the one with the worm). The worm is not intended to be eaten. It's there to indicate quality.
Think: If you are distilling your cactus mash and the alcohol content is high enough in the bottle to preserve that worm (it's actually a caterpillar taken from a cocoon) like a specimen in formaldehyde, Hey! You've got a good, strong bottle of drink!
Now, 'why tequila attracts police' is something I've never figured out...
Best wishes!

all I can say is tequila te-killya. Seriously, I don't know why you seem to get drunk faster on tequila, but I agree.... you do. As for the salt and the lemon or lime I think its to help bring out the flavor of the tequila.
My husband and I were in Mexico for our anniversary a few years ago and we went into a tequila shop and the shop keeper showed me the correct way to do a tequila shot, but didn't explain why you lick the back of your hand, dump some salt on it, take the shot them suck on the lemon or lime.

Now here is a question close to my heart. Tequila and mezcal are my favorite drinks. I'm pretty sure that tequila doesn't get you drunker any faster than shot of other spirits containing the same percentage of alcohol. The salt and lime are used to take the "bite" away from it.

A lot of the times its not the alcohol that makes you feel weird, its what you combine it with. The most sugars in the drink the harsher the drunkeness and the worse the hangover. I don't know specifically about tequila though.

just a guess here
maybe the salt dehydrated you and that affects the rate that it enters your blood stream
or if you're like me you do a few in a row(3), I never shoot whiskey(or anything else) in as quick a succession.
