is it wrong for girls to wear one too?

The gentlemen dressed up and when it became fashionable to wear the hat, they had to find a way to still bow. A bow was given to show the male was offering his unprotected neck to the sword of the one the bow was directed at, to show there was no animosity. (Wonder how many had their heads chopped off doing that!) Since a bow was usually executed upon entering the place where they were being entertained due to their host and hostess standing there to greet the guests, the hat was removed. It soon became a sign of respect when outside to remove or tip the hat to ladies in a modified bow, since they were often kept too far from the more lovely creatures to be bending over her hand to kiss it, another custom men used to get closer. Again, style became custom. As for the ladies, they also wore hats as part of their dress, but it went much further back to the time when a woman's hair was her glory and must be hidden from all men but her husband, after she married. Inside, she could let her family see the hair, father, brothers and sons, but not the household help, a light cloth had to cover the hair at mealtimes if there were servants. When hats were matched to the dresses and shoes, or I should say slippers since we are discussing ladies here, the ladies didn't need to bow and the hat would not fall off with the curstsy that was used to show female submission, (if judicious hat pins were in place), so the ladies kept their hats on until reaching home or the homes of very close friends, where they could lay them aside until ready to venture outside again.

No general it’s ok for a Lady to wear a hat inside often it’s a part of her outfit. For a man it’s just always been the polite to remove their hats when they are in a building

I'm not sure why, but women are permitted to wear hats inside.

From what i heard its only for boys, but fine for girls to wear a hat, but it all depends on your cultural background.

in the old days they could hide a weapon in the hat so they took it off to show there was no weapon
we still carry on the old custom but don't remember why
there was an english king who was insulted by someone who didn't take their hat off so he had the hat nailed to his head.
