Some of that time was spent driving and with the heat in the car on, so it was fairly room temp to warm for some of the time. Should I put it on my pizza, or just toss it out?

It is true that bacteria grows on food after four hours at temps between 40 and 140, but it also needs the right environment to grow. Bacteria won't really grow in salt water. And also think about blue cheese. It is aged at room temp for long periods of time in order to grow the bacteria that makes it blue. Anyway, if the container was completely sealed I would say yeah it should be fine.

No. It may be okay and I've taken this risk before (and may again on certain foods). There is something called the time-temperature danger zone. You throw away anything that is at a temperature between 41 and 140degrees F for 4 hours. Fresh spinach would be okay (and possibly cheese) but I'm sure this is a dish mixed together and this needs to be thrown away. A change in water, protein, and acidity levels can seriously increase dangerous bacteria growth in an otherwise safe food.

Any food left out at room temp for longer than 4 hours should be thrown out...regardless of how much salt you know/think it has. Bacteria growth happens in foods when its temperature reaches the Time-Temperature Danger Zone which is 40 deg. to 140 deg. Any food left in this temperature zone for longer than four hours has severe bacteria growth...the kind that can give you food poisoning. Even if you put it in the refrigerator for a few hours, the damage has been done and you should not eat it.

No. Seriously. Unless your car infested with bacteria, you're ok. The salt environment that feta comes in (unopened package or container, right?) is not conducive to evil poison things growing.

Now if your cousin didn't wash his hands after using the bathroom and stirred the feta with said unwashed hands... pitch it.

Bacteria growth starts quickly on food at room temperature. Why would you want to take the risk? Could prove to less expensive to replace the cheese than medical expenses from food poisoning.

I would probably eat it, Feta contains a lot of salt so you should be OK

I would totally not risk it, food poisoning is not a joke by any stretch of the imagination...err on the side of caution and throw it out...
