people are looking for meaning in life. Sometimes they get too influenced by a particular person or group.
side bar: cuts and sects= religion. A cult is just a derogatorily word for a religion. Granted some groups are cons or dangerous IE mass suicide or violence but that is besides the point.
bet you did not expect that out of me ;P

I feel that people that join cults or sects have low self worth. They need to feel accepted as they are by a group of people who will not judge them. Also, addiction issues can play a huge role in joining a cult. They become addicted to the cult, instead of being addicted to a drug or substance. It keeps them going.

God has created as a social people. We have an overwhelming need to belong to something. This is a strong attraction that cults and sects have on people.

I "PERSONALLY THINK" it must be wonderful feeling of actually finding others that feel and think as they do, without the reservations of morals or societies "stigma" they usually receive from established groups, be they church or social, or family.
No questions asked for why their hair is green or their tattoos, etc. Why this music, or why that - just acceptance for being another human, regardless of externals.
Externals will stop many in their tracks - many will cross the street to avoid dealing with a persons external looks/choice in music.
It takes a lot of commitment to get past externals and find the person inside, and even parents can fail to connect so the quester is left feeling alone.
Being ALONE is so powerful, (I hope you never find out), some will make bad choices instead of suffering any longer alone. (Or they could be good choices - I do not know!) I never had the courage to leave my community/family and thankfully never had that alone feeling that some have. I always had someone with me.

Sects and cults often target runaways, people from broken homes etc. There a place to belong to.

Because they have low self esteem and need to be around others that will boost there egos. They are usually serching for something in life to excite them and give them purpose. They are often naive and gullible and believe everything they hear. They are often easily influenced and conned. They are looking for easy quick solutions to their problems in life. Cults and sects are no different than gangs.

It probably gives their life a sense of meaning and purpose. Generally, people in cults are very good to each other (unless one of the values is crossed) and this can be comforting, like an alternative family.

To be a part of something. Gives a person a sense of belonging. I would think to be bamboozled by a cult leader one would have to have a low sense of self esteem.

Personally,I think they do because it fills a void. Maybe it fills a void for love, or attention, or a need to belong. Maybe because the are seeking and something from that group appeals to them. Some might because friends or family have joined and they influence them.
