This happened to our male kitten, He fell out of a tree and broke his back leg, we think.

He showed no signs of internal injurys, so we just waited.

We decided that if started acting worse, we were goign to turn him over to a no kill shelter, to get care, and so he can find a good home.

Luckly, it healed itself and he is completely fine.

Having an injured andimal is different then having an injured human, at the er they make you pay before you leave with your pet, at the human er you dont have to.

I understand what your going through, keep me posted on how your kitty is.

I didn't want to go in to this, but I'm thinking about what I would do, and I think I have to. I would not persue corrective surgery. At her age, she really only has about three more years at best, and asking her to go through a surgery that may cause more trouble than good just is not fair. An amputation is a time-consuming surgery. Anesthesia is always risky business, and is no better on older pets. She is going to be under for a while, and it will absolutely be risky. If you DO persue the amputation, I highly encourage pre-anesthetic bloodwork to make eliminate any kidney/liver damage that could just make the process more dangerous. Cats manage with three legs very well, and get used to it pretty quickly. She will have recovery time, which is painful, although I'm sure your vet will supply her with proper meds. If you decided to euthanize her, I wouldn't blame you. She is a senior citizen, and it may be kindest thing to do at this point. You'll spare her the recovery, the surgery, and learning to live without the extra leg at her age.

It is not too late to get it fixed....meanwhile, don't let it jump around on the leg as it can cause further damage. If you have a cage or can put it in a confined area until you can get it to a vet, it would help. Don't pick it up either. This happened to a cat that I was fostering, and it took a long time to heal. It can be costly because of xrays, so check with your local shelter or volunteers for animals group for help.

If you are sure the leg is broken I would try to take it into a vet. The longer it waits it could get infected and if bad enough the cat may have to have its leg amputated. I know the vet I worked for had some different forms of payments so I would talk to your vet about any sort of payment options. Some may even have funds set aside for hard luck cases.I would start there. At least ask your vet if there is any over the counter pain meds and antibiotics you can give in the mean time. Good luck

If you take it to a vet any vet and get the help the kitten needs then when pay time comes around tell them then you dont got the money and you need to set up a payment plan, try to have some cash on you to put down so they dont keep the kitten, I had to do that one time for my cat and it worked.

I just saw a Animal Cops show on TV two nights ago. The person who let their cat go for two weeks with a broken leg was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

It is your responsibility as the cats' owner to provide necessary medical treatment when your cat has been so severly injured. If you will not come up with the funds to have it have veterinary care the cat should be immediately surrendered to animal authorities for treatment or euthanasia so that it does not have to suffer any longer from your unconscionable neglect.

no, it IS not too late to fix the leg (usually), but only with help from an experienced person. However, there are some ways to relieve the pain:

1) Prop the leg up high in the air
2) Feed your cat plenty of fluids
3) Make sure the broken leg does not become infected

You let that cat suffer for a week?! You shouldn't be a pet owner if you aren't able to care for one.

xxx said it already - call an emergency vet clinic and explain the urgency and your need for help.

Unfortunately, your cat might be infected or worse. You were selfish to wait.

Wow, you let your cat suffer for a WEEK with a broken leg? Take it to the nearest animal shelter and ask their vet to take a look at it. They'll probably give you a discounted rate if you say you can't afford a vet.
