I have a small lump in my breast and my Dr. is going to do a biopsy. I was too stunned to listen to the details and have no idea of what is involved in this procedure. Aren't biopsies done by laser now? Is this a one day surgery? Any other details would be nice. I can't reach his office till Mon morn. and I am a complete wreck.

It depends on what kind of biopsy you are having as to what is involved. I've never heard of it being done with a laser. I had a core needle biopsy that was ultrasound guided. It was a piece of cake. I was really apprehensive at first but it turned out to be really easy on me. They numb it up at first which I just knew was going to hurt but it didn't hurt at all. I didn't even know that he had stuck it in. The core needle is a hollow needle that is pushed through the skin really quickly with some kind of devise...reminded me of a nail gun how quickly it pushed it in. They did that three times and then it was over. They packed my bra with ice packs and sent me home. I did bruise some but I didn't have any pain afterwards.

I had a biopsy done 8/28/06. The mammogram showed a place in the milk duct. Since I am an endometrial cancer survivor, the doctor did an outpatient surgical removal of the lump. I have about a two inch incision-which required glue not stitches-around my aerole. It was benign. You find out in a few days the results. I actually went to lunch after the procedure at the mall. You will be okay. I never even had to take my pain meds.

There are different ways to do a biopsy. I had a core needle biopsy /Ultra sound guided. They numb the area, make a small cut and take samples with the needle.
Another is a stereotactic (spelling) biopsy where a computer guided needle takes a sample.
And the open biopsy. This is when the surgeon takes out samples.
I know it is nerve wrecking and even though I hate to tell you this. The wait for the result is even worse. Good luck to you.

Welll, I have lumps all the time and have never had a biopsy. Did you have a mammogram and find a lump or did he palpitate it and say--"oops, a lump?" Even if you went in and he felt it to leap to a biopsy w/o other tests seems a tad extreme...When is your period , where are you in your cycle, have you had lumps before that you know of...almost all women have lumps it comes with the breast tissue and the estogen. Do you have any primary female relatives who have had breast cancer are you over 50 have you had any other sort of cancer or does it run in your family -if not it is extremely unlikely that you have it..statistically speaking.

I would be more POed at him for making you terrified then afraid about the lump...he is a dumba** call him at home. He makes a FORTUNE; let him calm you down It is his job afterall..After this is done FIND a DIFFERENT DOCTOR!..he is a cad.(to put it nicely)

If your doc is doing a needle biopsy, your skin will be numbed and a needle will be used to draw up a few cells of the lump tissue for exam.
There are websites to read about the procedures while you are waiting til Monday.
I am not familiar with a laser diagnostic procedure.
Good Luck with your exam.

i had this done.. not to long ago..

i found a couple of lumps in the my breast.. they did and ultrasound and a mammogram and they got a needled and took some of the tissue with it and sent it out. or they can cut it out. i took the other option. If he didn't schedule a surgery then its a bioposy by needle its quick and painless.

they found out from mine that it was just cyst because of the disease i had.

I don't know about the laser i think that's totally new.

i know that his office is closed but you should be able to call and have the person be able to call you just to give you a peace of mind and gl.

biosy is a simple procedure. it's usually done in a surgery center. you should be able to go home the same day. i have seen and participated in a breast biopsy procedure before. the doctor will just make a small incision to get the specimen out. check this website out
