My friend, who is a guy, told me that he'd heard a legend that there are a series of gifts that should be presented to a woman in advance of the actual engagement ring.

It may be a cultural thing.

Certainly cultures arising from the British (so US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the like) take the view that no lady would accept a gift from a gentleman who was not either a family member or their fiance.

I've never heard of that. I'd think that any bride who wanted that would be pretty greedy.
