I just took my new puppy to the vet last week and his nose was and still is dry. I asked the vet if it meant anything, and they said it was just a myth.
but...

Learning to observe what is normal and and what is not in animals that can't talk takes time and patience. The purpose of this FAQ is to serve as a basic guideline to know when to consult your vet to see if an examination is in order.
A. There isn't a clear cut answer for this question. A dog's (or cat's) nose may be very wet and cool one moment then be warmer and not-so-moist the next. All in the course of a day.
However, prolonged dry, cracked nose, particularly with loss of pigmentation, scabs or open sores should definitely be examined by your veterinarian. An ill animal will often have a warm, dry nose, and there are a host of dermatological (skin) problems that can be seen in this area, such as Pemphigus Foliaceus.

The temperature of a dogs nose does not indicate health or illness or if they have a fever. There is an "old wives tale" that cold wet noses indicate health. And Warm or dry noses indicate a fever or illness. The only accurate method to access a dog's temperature is to take it with a thermometer. Normal dog temperature is 100.5 to 102.5 degrees F.

That really has been found to be not true and is considered a myth by vets. His nose is an indication of humidity in the air, so the air must be dry because of having to use heat because of the winter. Give him water in case of dehydration.

Generally, yes, especially if it's also warm. That cold wet nose may be uncomfortable to you when your dog touches you with it, but it means he's fine. If his nose is dry and warm, phone your vet. The vet can ask specific questions to ascertain if the dog is truly ill and needs to come in for a visit.

Maybe...everytime my dog wakes up his nose is dry, but then it goes back to being cold and wet in about a minute.
