Catholics are the largest Christian sect at 1.1 or 1.2 billion members, but the Protestants aren't far behind with between 800 million and 1 billion. You must take into affect that many Protestants in the world are persecuted and may claim they are of another religion while practicing Protestantism secretly.
Ex. Protestants in China.
It is predicted that Protestantism will supersede the Catholic population in 50 to 100 years. Protestants are full of energy and tempered by persecution. They also have more money and lack the scandals, bankruptcy, and corrupt hegemony that the Catholic church suffers from.

Roman Catholics, by far.
Half of the world’s 2 billion Christians are Catholics. The next largest “megablock” of Christians is found in the denominationally-unaffiliated “Independent Churches,” which have some 400 million members — almost twice as many as the 217 million Orthodox believers in the world.
