That iz wun ov thee weerd thingz about thee American Englisch.

They hav borrowd werdz frum so manee uther langwages that sumtimes thee wurds dont mak centse.

I agree that to a foreigner, American English has to be very confusing as there are many inconsistencies.

Look at this though, through, thought.
We know how they should be pronounced by memorization, but there is no exact rule to teach a kid learning to read or a foreigner. The letters ough change from an "o" sound to an "u" sound then to an "aw" sound.

Thanks for keeping us aware of the intricacies of Englisch.

Because there was a typo in the dictionary and webster had too much pride to change them, so he kept them. Plus parkways are located in parks, so it stuck and was believable.
