We have a 10 month old son and the puppy is 11 weeks old, almost house trained. I'm worried that all of them are hyper but my husband assures me they are not.

Spaniels, especially Springers, DO make great family pets! I do not say this about many dogs, but Spaniels are loyal, loving, highty-intelligent, and love to please you. If he comes housetrained, all the better! I would say go for it, as raising kids around dogs while they are young is a great idea as well. Just make sure to get him in to some awesome professional obedience training as that is a good foundation for these working breed dogs. And having him professional groomed every three months or so also helps maintain the coat, as long as you leave the feathering longer.

I vote yes!! You will love this dog:)

Oh, and I disagree with TLCtreeCA. Any dog can be housebroken in less than one week. With time and commitment through positive crate training, the dog can learn where is potty and where is NOT potty. A dog door will help immensely!!
All of my 9 dogs were housetrained in less than 7 days, even some are rescues. So there. True dog trainers know this is possible, no matter what breed.

They are the ultimate household puppy. The English Springer Spaniel represents probably the finest divergence among operating and exhibit traces of any breed of puppy. A area-bred puppy and a exhibit-bred puppy seem to be one-of-a-kind breeds, however are registered in combination. In reality, the gene swimming pools are just about entirely segregated and feature been for a minimum of 70 years. A area bred puppy might now not be even remotely aggressive in a brand new puppy exhibit whilst a exhibit puppy might be not likely to have the pace or stamina to achieve a area trial. The natural Springer is pleasant, keen to thrill, speedy to study and inclined to obey. The Springer is an affectionate and handy-going household puppy, and its alertness and attentiveness make it the ultimate searching accomplice. An sensible puppy, lively and keen to thrill, an English Springer is with ease integrated right into a household environment. The English Springer Spaniel ranks thirteenth in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, regarded an first-class operating puppy. NOTE!! Some Springer Spaniels may also be inclined to the situation Springer Rage. Springer Rage is an traditionally misdiagnosed situation because there's little or no identified approximately this situation regardless of tons of study. It is wherein the puppy all of a sudden assaults or indicates uncharacteristic bouts of aggression which can be completely out of person. Springer Rage traditionally manifests itself while the Springer assaults for no obvious motive; the puppy may even be asleep after which assault with out caution

English Springer Spaniels are great dogs! Our family had one for 12 years. He was a bundle of energy for at least 5 years, then he slowed down some. We had no small children so it was not a problem. Plenty of exercise and toys should help if he is hyper. Training will be worth every effort you put in. Just be mindful that you get out what you put in as far as training goes...

The pup is a long way form being housebroken at 11 weeks.
And most are very active dogs. They are a hunting breed so they have a high prey drive and like to chase things. But yes they are busy and active dogs who require a fair amount of time for walking or running to settle them down some.
Most of the hunting breeds needs lots of exercise and outside time. They need to be kept busy.
Springers are nice dogs and do most do well with children. Not a 10 month old. Your son should never be left alone with any dog at that age.

We used to have a spaniel when I was little they do calm down once they're older like any other dog. Sometimes they do tend to have more energy than other breeds and require a bit more exercise and playing but so long as you train them, their "hyperness" isn't really an issue. Make sure you get them leash trained and what ever you do don't let them (the dog) train anyone in the house, they're good at that, and they will use it to their advantage.

I think it's a great choice for a family. Although, if you're worried about them being hyper, then it's not the dog for you. I had two growing up and they really are the most loving, sweet, trusting dogs...but boy are they hyper!! It's not a bad thing though. You just have to make sure they have plenty of exercise and attention. They're usually very loving towards children as well, but with any dog make sure they're never alone together and teach your child early on not to pull his tail or ears, etc. I think you'll be really happy with your decision.

I have an english springer spaniel. They are very good companion dogs. They are hyper at times, but then again, all puppies are. They are loyal. They don't get to big, which is nice. I would recommend this type of dog.

I tend to agree with you, though they can make very good pets. The three I have known have all been very hyper and needed a lot of attention and exercise. They were bred as hunting dogs.
