I know how appealing certain dogs can be. But in all honesty, try to consider adopting a dog based more on personality traits before you adopt based on looks. I say this because so many dogs end up in shelters because people do just what you are looking to do and end up returning them because the dog isn't acting they way they want them to. Do your research based on breed/behavior traits and what you want from you dog. Then look at that breed of dog. Muts make fantastic pets. The generally live longer and healthier lives and are generally speaking very well behaved. Good Luck!

Petfinder is GREAT, but some shelters and rescues don't list on them and the dogs have less of a chance of getting adopted. Look on a map and figure out how far you'd be willing to drive for a perfect companion. Write down a list of the counties. Then look on a search engine for " _name of county _ animal control " ... animal shelter, dog pound, humane society, aspca, and any other kind of group that is popular in your area.

When i was looking for a companion for my GSD i was surprised to see how many shelters/rescues in my area didn't list with Petfinder. There were some GREAT dogs too.

Good luck!

well, whether or not u have one in ur area, i would suggest looking for a humane society and adopt an animal that was neglected or somthing or other.....it is the best feeling to have to adopt an animal that struggled that way u have the feeling that u gave that animal another chance, its the best feeling in the world. they will give u all the records for that animal and what happened to him/her. good luck!

You and your roommate? Doesn't sound to me like a good environment for a dog. Will you be able to take care of him? A dog is a life long committment; do NOT get one if you will not be able to take care of one.

Here is a site from your area and perhaps they can connect you to more online viewing sites or tell you more places to search. Happy hunting!
