There is some research going on now to investigate the cat's purr. It has been suggested that it can have a therapeutic effect on the cat and promote healing (cats purr when they are in pain). That would have evolutionary benefit if it enabled an injured or sick cat to heal and live to reproduce.

Researchers are also looking into the possibility that a purring cat can have an effect in helping people deal with physical illness. It has been determined that having pets to love does lower people's blood pressure.
