Absolutely not. Only liars, thieves, adulterers and murderers should be allowed to hold office.

Why not? We allow everyone else to hold office. A person should not be kept from holding office based on their religious belief. I for one am very tired of everyone else being able to express their non-christian views openly and freely without rebuke. Christians are no different from anyone else, I have had enough of this nations constant attack on the beliefs and values of Christianity. I will allow anyone to express their beliefs and points of view no matter what they are. I may not agree, but I am not going to stop them from expressing or practicing what they believe. If we want to start keeping people from holding office based on their religion we have entered anew phase in the moral disintegration of our country. You do not have to vote for them if you do not like them, you have that right. They have the right to run for, and if elected hold that office.

as much as I am against fundamentalist Christianity I think it would be absolutely wrong to ban a person from public office because of a religious conviction

Should Atheists? Should Agnostics?
You know that seperation of Church and State thing, thats part of the reason ANYONE of any religion can hold public office if they are elected.

The US Constitutions specifically forbids any religious test to hold any office in this country. Some places have passed local laws saying atheists are barred from it, but when challenged, the courts have struck them down.

Since in America, we have freedom of religion, I do not think that we should bar anyone from holding public office due to the religion that they profess. That is religous discrimination.

I don't think anyone who is incapable of upholding the most basic laws of our country should be allowed to hold office. But then, what do I know - atheists aren't allowed to run for office in my state.

they are legally able to run for any office, and if they can keep their religion out of their work, it can work smoothly.
however, i doubt they can keep their beliefs out of the job, and they are gonna absolutely ruin everything. see whats going on in middle east countries with religious fundamentalists for leaders. not nice.

It is a free land------------free for all religions. But, I hate the thought of any of them holding an office. They are scary.
Thank goodness Bush will soon be gone!--------wish if would be faster than 2 years.

Yes, they should but lets hope the electorate isn't dumb enough to vote for them.
To Gary: the Founding Fathers had a deep distrust of mixing religion and government so your quotes, if even accurate, are misleading.
