Would like some feedback. My 60 pound dog is scheduled for a tooth extraction(molar)this next week. The vet is charging me about $722.00. Does anyone know if this is about the going rate? Have never had to have this done before, so I do not know. Anyone out there know? Thank you.

Does your dog have any other medical ailments that require special attention or that could make the dental surgery more complicated ? Does your dog, for any medical reason, fall into a special risk category ?

If not, then that figure sounds very, very high.

If I I were you, I'd first call around and get other quotes - then I'd ask your Vet to breakdown the cost of the surgery and explain why his fee is so high.

In the best interest of your dog, I wouldn't just change Vets without first asking / confronting your current Vet ... there **might** be a medically related reason - relative to your dog's health history / profile - for why he is charging so much.

Good Luck !!

A 60-pound dog does require more care and anesthesia during the precedure, not to mention pain meds for afterwards, just as do humans. A tooth extraction can cost anywhere from $80-some hundreds of dollars! That price is mighty hefty, so you could call around. I suspect you are at an emergency clinic, where the rates are always ridiculously higher than at a smaller local hospital.

May I suggest that to prevent further extractions, your labrador get a yearly dental which scales and brushes the teeth professionally and keeps the teeth white and smelling great!! This can cost under $300 and can help prevent other health issues as well.

Also, let your dog chew on a 12" bully stick once a week, which acts as an abrasive dog toothbrush and really cleans the teeth!

Call around to some other vets in your local area. Prices may be very different across different regions, and you should expect the same procedure to cost substantially more in Manhattan or Los Angeles than it will in Greenville, South Carolina.

If you still think the price seems high, ask your vet outright if there is a reason the cost seems to be above the going rate in your area. There may be a complicating factor that is increasing the cost, but they should be able to explain that to your satisfaction, else a second opinion from another vet may be in order.

No idea but pulling a dog's tooth is a lot more difficult than a human's tooth.

Call around to some local Vets and see what they would charge. They have to put the dog to sleep for the surgery; which requires anesthesia so that costs.

HOLY SH*T!

WHO ARE YOU SEEING? DR. 90210?

A little high? My lord! I think I paid $200 when my dog had a tooth extraction and I go to one of the most expensive vets in my area! (I'm an hour or so from Chicago).

My dog is about 30 lbs and when he was fixed, he had a tooth extracted but it wasn't a molar. It only cost me $200. I think you should shop around.

Sounds pretty high to me. My dog had major surgery and it did not cost that much. Is your dog only having one tooth extracted? If so, find another vet.

That is high.
I had a 100 pound dog who had 8 teeth removed and a full cleaning and it was only around $400.
So for one tooth that is high.

That sounds kind of expensive. By comparison, mh dog was spayed for around $130 and that included an overnight stayed and pain meds. BUT I am not an expert on dog dental care or expenses...
