Well (especially in the case of Shakespeare) they know all the inside jokes and how each line impacts the entire play.

As an actor/actress, you know everything that you can about your lines and character, so you understand how everything connects. Audience members sometimes don't realize that every action is done for a reason, even if a background person is walking around with no lines they are important.

I know when I did theater at school I was amazed to learn all the work and thought that went into everything. As an audience member with no previous play experience you just don't know how hard the actors/actresses had to work.

There's a lot of information behind the scene's that the audiences are not privy to. Unless one studies The Theatre, we may never know what the actors know.. I am an usher at the #1 theater in Houston, and I don't know a thing about what's going on up on the stage.

But, of course, I have an idea, but even the idea may not be absolute.
