I am extremely intelligent based on standardized tests and what others tell me, but am not very attractive and am stuck in a job that isn't going anywhere (for various reasons, I can't leave this job for two more years). I also lack the confidence to give speeches, but will try to join Toastmasters. I am not even 30 yrs old yet.

I am biding my time and want to learn skills that will help me in the future. What do you guys suggest? I am especially interested in getting a job involving Biotech, Nanotech etc... something that will help people with medical problems. I am finishing my MBA and don't want to get a degree in Biology at this point -- but want to work in that field, even possibly as a medical assistant (not a doctor).

Even very intelligent people can lack motivation, passion or direction. Just because you are bright, does not mean you have all the answers -- but you probably DO know where to find them.

You may want to speak with a professional career counsellor, simply in order to save time (rather than reinvent the lightbulb, yes?). I am sure that they can at least point you in the right direction.

As far as skills that will help you -- yes, Toastmasters and a comfort level with speaking to groups can be a great asset. I have always felt that an ability to communicate well, whether orally or in writing, will take you a long way.

I'm not suggesting a total makeover, but sometimes appearance does count. If you have a friend whose taste and descretion you trust, talk with them and ask for suggestions. Work also on developing an air of confidence and ability -- not smugness, arrogance or ego.

Good luck -- been there, done that.
