I have read through several responses and I have seen that wide variety of responses. Sadly, most people go by hearsay. I have seen people lump ideas from Christian Scientist, Jehovah Witnesses, Seven Day Adventist, etc. all together and not be able to separate who believes what. I have also seen some very prejudiced statements on the list as well.
If I had to put things in a nutshell, I would say: Mormons are Christians. The name of the Church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We believe that Christ did not end the line of Prophets, but only He is the Messiah and salvation comes only through Him. Most Churches are looking for a "falling away" before Christ's second coming. We believe it was called the Dark Ages and many truths of the Gospel were lost.
If you have ever studied any Bible history, you know that not all scriptures were included to compile the Bible. We do believe in additional scriptures and modern revelation. We use the Book of Mormon in addition to the Bible. We see it as a history of part of the Native Americans and it does not contradict the Bible. (The usual anti Mormon argument is a passage in Revelations talking about adding and taking away from the Bible . . . a similar passage is in Exodus.)
All I know is I explored a lot of Churches. I have a better relationship with Christ and have learned more about how to be a Christain in this Church than any other Christian Church I have ever had involvement with over the years.

Mormons are not Christians for the simple fact that they believe when they die, they become a God. The Catholic Church does not recognize the Mormon baptism for this reason. Catholics, as well as most Christians, believe there is only one God, The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. AKA The Holy Trinity. Which, also, Mormons do not believe in. They believe all kinds of wacky stuff. They also wear "garments" under their underwear. If you are a Mormon woman you get screwed over as well. Men can be "sealed" to more than one woman...woman can be "sealed" only to ONE man.

God, Jesus, Jospeh Smith as a prophet, the Book of Mormon as an addition to the Bible, Salvation by Works, not by Grace, they are family oriented, put lots of focus on families, you must be married in the temple to be sealed for eternity in heaven, when you go to heaven, you will become "Gods" of your own worlds, wich you will populate if your a good Mormon.
They used to practice multiple marriages, more than one wife, they frown on divorce, all young men are expected to complete a mission, lets see.....oh, they dont think you should have caffine, but they own stock in Coke, so Coke products are okay.
Theres more, but that all I can think of now.

If you talk to a morman and try to discover what they are all about, you will find Mormons explain their faith candidly they claim to bring new truths about Jesus Christ. Their beliefs are really more similar to an ancient heresy than to be the Gospel taught by Christ and His Apostles. I believe they are a cult group. ;)

They don't believe that the spirit of God can work miracles. but only in there church. they called me crazy when I told them of some miracles that the Spirit of God had blessed my family with, they said that only higher ups in there church can work miracles.I was about to be baptized into there weird church. I am so glad I found out that they don't know anything but there church. The Spirit of Gods power and guidance doesn't need the Mormons to work thru inclusively, It is for everyone.God loves us all.not just them. there very strange people.

Mormons believe that "as we are, so Jesus was, and as Jesus became so can we become."
Jesus is God of planet earth. And as Jesus is God, so we can become gods of our own planets. If we are really good Mormons then we can become celestial gods with celestial wives and populate our planet with our own off-spring.
