Why do guys do this?

Question

This happens most of the time and I'm wondering why.
I will be just doing a regular thing or something and when I guy walks by he'll cough and clear his throat and sometimes he'll spit. Most of the time the guy just kind of like hacks. Why do they do that? I'm wondering if they are trying to prove their manliness or something....
I'm clueless, really.......

Yes, I think it is a "meat-head" and "red-neck" thing. I live in the south so there are a lot of those here. No, they aren't sick either.
I'm not around a construction site, but a landscaping site is round a bout where I work and they only do that noise when they walk by.

I have never heard of that before. I suspect its trying to prove their manliness, like you said. It's kind of like at a football party where they crush beer cans on their forehead or grunt when lifting weights. Saying "I'm a manly man."
I don't do that, cause I don't think I have to prove that I'm a guy to anyone. The guys that do those things are "meatheads" or "rednecks". It's kind of like their "mating call".

Well.... maybe he is just clearing his throat, but he could also be trying to catch your attention. Maybe he thinks you're hot! If a lot of guys do this while your around maybe you are hot and you don't even know it, darl!
In a lot of ways they are just trying to prove their manliness and don't want to let others know that they like a pretty girl. It's really childish and annoying but not all guys do that. There are some that are sensitive enough to let you know what they are thinking.

I hate to admit it but this might not just be happening when they walk by you. A lot of times a guy is just not aware of how disgusting that behavior appears to others. Especially this time of year when a lot of people have colds, guys are quick to hack away and not realize the impression they are making. I don't think they are doing it because of you...they are doing it because their throat itches and they just aren't thinking about how disgusting they sound.

It might be a form of an animal in the animal kingdom peeing or puffing out their chest when around others. Personally, I find public spitting disgusting. Body fluids, any body fluids, should be tended to in private...that includes saliva and spitting. When I see a man spit in public, I don't see it as a sign as manliness as you stated a wonder of. When a man spits in public to me his I.Q. automatically goes down 10 points.

I was out shopping earlier this evening and some older man is leaning against the wall outside and as me and my mother walked past, out flies a big old wad of snot onto the ground nearby. YUCK!

I guess the little babies just want attention but are afraid to say anything. Spitting is not a sign of being a man, it is a sign of being a pig.

it could be Post Nasal Drip.. it's where you get constant drainage in the back of your throat and it makes you constantly want to clear your throat.. women can get it too, but they're usually better at clearing their throat quiety..

you probably live somewhere in the south we don't do that in NY. if i want to come up to a girl ill come up to her not spit on her face aor watever you saying. mayb he just wants attention.

they do that in California too and i am forced to believe that some males are born with a inability to swallow. he he makes you glad you don't have to eat with them.
