I know it's supposed to be improper, but it was never explained to me why. In a way it just seems really old-fashioned. What exactly is the purpose behind this rule? Why does it offend people, other than just the fact that it's an etiquitte rule? When is it OK for a man to have his hat on inside a building?

Here's the real, actual answer:

You put on a hat when you go someplace.

If you're wearing a hat indoors, it suggests that you have someplace better to be!

P.S. A woman is exempt from this rule if her hat is considered to be decorative, and not functional.

It just depends on how you were raised. When I was growing up wore a hat indoors, but at my grandparents house I had to take my hat off when I was at the table eating. There have only been a few places that I have been to where I was asked to take my had off when I was inside, but that was several years ago. I don't really wear a hat that often now, but I do take it off during the Pledge of Allegiance and when someone is praying.

Some animals(dogs primarily) can become very spooked by a person in a hat. Nobody wants to be bit. Do you have any dogs. If you do-- put a hat on and see if your dog recognizes you right away. You can almost always fool a dog by wearing a hat, much like Clark Kent fooled us all by donning glasses.

I was at a nice restaurant a couple of weeks ago and some idiot was wearing a dirty baseball cap throughout the entire meal. I wanted to rip it off his head and throw it into the fireplace. It's just tacky and disrespectful.

If you are out in public dining, you should be decent enough to dress a little better than tacky.

Its roots may come from the new testament stating that 1Cr 11:4Every man praying or prophesying, having [his] head covered, dishonoureth his head.1Cr 11:7For a man indeed ought not to cover [his] head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God:
