I want to become freinds with this girl first before I turn up the notch and get close to her, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to just "be freinds" type dates?

Just hang out with you both's mutual friends. This doesn't have to be an actual date or any specific location/ time. You get to know the person and how their personality is like when observing them in a large group of closed friends.
Then go from there.

Include other friends and invite her along for an non-date activity... "Hey, a bunch of us are gonna go play pool/go bowling/go rollerblading today/tonight, wanna come?"
The next important thing is to UNDER-stay your welcome. Don't let yourself linger so long that she has a chance to get sick of you or get creeped out by you. If you come off like a stalker, then it's all over.
Don't forget to SMILE. Happiness is contagious. If you're in a good mood when you're around, she will come to have positive feelings toward you and look forward to seeing you. Just think happy thoughts.
BE GENUINE. Don't try to come off as overly puffed up or Mr. Perfect. Just be yourself, be friendly, be honest, be interested when she has something to say.
The last thing I'll say is don't let yourself wait TOO long... If she comes to think of you as "just a friend," then she may not want anything more out of your relationship. Nobody wants to be hear, "I just think of you as a friend."

Just be yourself..if you want suggestions for dates that is "just friends" have her come over and watch a movie or go out to a movie...go to the mall...hang out....find out what she likes to do first then plan something the revolves around her...girls like that...but most of all just be yourself..

Stay in public places...movies, ice skating, the zoo, an apple orchid, a walk around a museum.....etc NOT at your place
