No, the reason is there are certain bacteria and viruses that cats excrete (I forget the exact name now, it's on the litter box most of the time). If you go near it (touch it), you risk getting this bug. Next it goes to your baby....not a good combination....you don't want these buggers!

Litter by itself is not the problem, it's what comes out of the cat. It's not their fault, it's just nature.

Do you not have anyone who can help you with this? Perhaps an automatic litter box for now and have someone empty it when needed or talk to your doctor if there is NOBODY who can help. He may recommend lots of protection like a mask and gloves and lots of washing afterwards. Just don't risk it...get help!

No! Never! There is a disease, cant remember the name, but you can get it from handling the litter or working with your bare hands in the dirt outside where cats go to the bathroom at, it can cause your unborn baby serious harm.... i went thru the lecture from my doc when i was pregnant, & they all say NO CAT POOP FOR PREGNANT WOMEN!!!!!

Used litter contains many bacteria that can be harmful, especially to pregnant women. So it is important to wash your hands well after cleaning litter boxes or handling used litter

The parasite that causes toxoplasmosis can be contracted from cat feces if they kill and eat live animals - especially mice. If your cat lives indoors and doesn't hunt or eat prey they won't have it in their systems.

40-50% of the adult human population of the US have had toxoplasmosis and have antibodies for it in their bodies. Your doctor can determine if you have the antibodies in your blood. You can contract toxoplasmosis from handling any raw meat, like forming hamburger patties to grill for your family. As with any meat handling in your kitchen you should be scrupulous about washing your hands every time you handle it - to protect from ecoli or salmonella too.

The toxoplamosis parasite is most dangerous to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy. So use discretion in cleaning a litterbox of feces. Use a scooper, put the debris in a brown paper bag, and desposit outside in the trash. Then wash your hands with warm soapy water.

I heard that you aren't supposed to. Health issues. If you are pregnant, I'd advise you to move the litter where you aren't near and have husband/other person change it. =)

A lot of doctors want their patients to avoid this activity due to the possibility of acquiring toxoplasmosis that can harm the fetus with possible abortion. Have a nice day.

1 that is an olds wives tale. 2 you can go near it - I would not recommend changing it. 3 make your man change it cuz it isn't nice for you to be on your hands and knees when you're carrying HIS child.

You will need to read further down beyond the part about cats and babies, but this will answer the question. There are some other helpful suggestions about your cat/s and the new baby also. http://cats.about.com/cs/catmanagement101/a/humanpregnancy.htm
