I guess it's because of a primitive, embedded need for security that dates back to early humanity. The man who could provide the best would always get the girl. It carries on today in its modern form of "golddigging". Financial stability (while many women won't admit it for fear of being labeled shallow) is a primary motivating factor in choosing a man to date/marry. It sucks the big one for us working class guys, many of whom have alot to offer, but no one said life was fair.
